Be a member of our Anatomy Relay for Life Team, the Tumorators! Join the team at the Relay for Life website. Post a reflection on why you are participating in this event. What inspired you to do this?
The inspiration for me doing this is primarily because my grandpa had skin cancer and im at a high risk of getting melanoma. I love the summer and being in the sun and hate sunscreen so this is my way of starting new and becoming aware of the seriousness of what i could have and be affected by. I have not started fundraising yet but i plan on just getting the word out on facebook and getting my mom at the hospital to help out.
I am doing Relay for Life this year for the very first time! I'm so excited to be apart of this event because of the amazing cause and the fun experience. I am doing Relay for Life for my uncle who has prostate cancer. He is in the middle of fighting this disease and has recently learned that it has spread to his bones. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to join this organization in order to support and raise money for not only my uncle, but also to remember those who lost their lives, celebrate with the survivors, and support those who are fighting now. I'm ecstatic to be participating in this awesome experience!
This is my first time ever to join relay for life. Before, I always had another event the same night so I was never able to attend. Also, one of my good friends, Callie, was diagnosed with lung cancer when we were both 8th graders. She passed away two years ago as of last week. It was my first real experience with death from this traumatic of an illness; I hope to be making a difference so that kids like Callie don't have to have a shortened life. Also, my dad and my grandpa on my mom's side have skin cancer. It has always been benign and removed immediately but it is always scary to find. This means I am at a high risk for skin cancer when I am older. By joining relay for life, I hope to raise money in order to end some suffering and fighting of loved ones in the future.
I was a part of Relay for Life last year. I am going again this year, but it has taken a whole new meaning for me. My Aunt passed away from Leukemia a couple of months ago. It was very sad for my mom and her brothers and sisters. I never want anyone to go through that so i am helping to find a cure for cancer. I want to help make a difference for those who are unfortunate enough to get cancer. Relay for Life is a fun way to support a good cause. I am not on the Tumorators but I assure you I will be there. I have already signed up to be on another team.
This will be my fourth time participating in Relay for Life! My primary motivation for participating is because one of my coaches at gym survived breast cancer twice. Every year she creates a team and almost our entire team participates in the relay supporting her, as well as anyone else that has battled cancer. Because of her I am signed up to participate on her team every year! I feel that if people can join together to find a cure for cancer then the whole world would be a better place, so people have no reason not to participate - especially in a fun event like Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a great cause, and I hope to make a difference so that survival rates increase and save people from shortened lives. I have fortunately not experienced a loved one pass away because of cancer, but my best friend has. The loss affected her in more ways than you could ever imagine, and I hope that one day nobody has to go through that kind of pain.
This will be the first time I have ever participated in this event. My motivation for this was because my aunt and my grandma both died of cancer. I never got to meet my grandma but I did get to see what my aunt went through. She seemed to be in pain constantly and it brought my entire family down. I am participating in this because I would like to see cancer eradicated and not cause pain to other people and their families.
I am on my mom's team for Relay for Life. Her friend is struggling with cancer, and it is likely than she will soon lose her fight. My mom wanted to start her own team for her and I joined for my personal reasons. I, personally, am walking because one of my best friends died of rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare lung cancer, in 2010. She was an amazing person and I really want to respect her in walking for her. My great-grandmother on my mom's side, and my dad's brother died from different types of cancer when I was very young. My whole family has had a lot of experience with dealing with cancer and I'm excited to be involved with Relay for Life, and I'm excited to honor their lives through this.
This is my first time participating in this event. What really inspired me was my grandma died of cancer. She passed away when I barely had turned seven. She was diagnosed with liver cancer when I was young, so I didn’t find out until I got a little bit older. We were in our house about to eat lunch and we get a phone call from my aunt telling us that it was time to say goodbye to her. My dad was the first one to talk to her, so we passed the phone around saying our goodbyes to my grandma, and I was the last one to talk to her. I told her I loved her so much and that I will never forget her and her very last words were “I love you Julie.” After that the room was quiet and full of tears. It was really tough to accept the fact that she was gone. I want to honor her name while participating in this great event as well as honor all survivors and those who are fighting through this rough time. I’m excited to be part of Relay for Life.
