There are people all over the world who are making a difference in the lives of others. Who inspires you? How are they trying to make a positive impact on the world?
Taylor's Gift is a great organization that is inspired by Taylor Storch who died in a tragic skiing accident. Her death saved peoples' lives because she donated her organs to those in need. Taylor's family created this organization to encourage people to become organ donors and save peoples' lives after theirs is gone. This organization has inspired many people in Coppell and throughout Texas to sign up to be organ donors.
Invisible Children is a great organization that was inspired by three young filmmakers who went to Africa for a film adventure, but later down the road they realized what was going on in central Africa as little boys were forced to fight for their lives and shoot guns to survive. Invisible Children uses film and social action to end child labor and child soldiers in central Africa. They want to bring peace to Africa. This organization has had a huge impact in Coppell and throughout the country as more and more people join the club to support the cause.
Relay for Life is an event where people honor those who have passed away from cancer and celebrate those who have survived. It is an overnight event normally held at a park or school. The purpose of this event is to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. The people who participate in Relay for Life help raise money by asking for donations and by setting a certain goal of money they want to raise based on how many laps they think their team can walk or run. This is a great event because it helps raise a ton of money and awareness for all types of cancer. It's also a lot of fun and anyone in the community can participate.
Touch A life foundation is an inspiring foundation that was created by the Cope family who suffered the death of their 15-year-old son Jasten. Their son died suddenly from an undetected heart defect. After dealing with the loss of their son, Pam and Randy, parents of Jasten, asked people to donate money to a memorial fund established in Jasten's name. Surprisingly they raised nearly $25,000. Not knowing how to spend the money, they eventually decided to donate a portion of the funds to their friends who had built an orphanage in Vietnam. Pam and Randy decided to partner with volunteers in Vietnam and use Jantsen’s gift to rent a house in Saigon, hire houseparents’ and bring in fifteen children who would be given a permanent home, an education, medical care, and a chance to be part of a family. A few months later, they rented another house, brought home fifteen more kids, and Touch a Life was born. Today, the foundation supports 211 children in eleven group homes throughout Vietnam. To date, working in partnership with a remarkable team of Ghanaians, TAL has rescued 68 children from slavery and built a residential facility where these former slave children can live, receive an education and have a chance at hope.
The Make a Wish Foundation was started in 1980 when a leukemia patient wanted to become a police officer. The seven year old got a day where he was able to ride in a police helicopter, receive a custom made police uniform, and earn wings for his uniform by taking a battery operated motorcycle proficiency test. Since then over 215,000 wishes have been granted for children ages 3-17 who are battling a life-threatening illness. In order for a wish to be granted there are volunteers who meet with eligible patients to find out what their wish is. The majority of people that work for this foundation are volunteers. Jobs include fundraising, office help, translators, public speaking, and wish granting. This foundation is amazing and because of it a lot of really sick kids are getting something they wished for.
The work of the Mercy Ship really inspired me. Going to Africa and treating the people who do not have proper health care facilities in their community/country and providing them with medical help is what really inspires me for the volunteering work. Spending their own money travel to help people in such poor condition is a great job. This work of Mercy Ship brings hope in the people's mind. Many people throughout out the world are living in such condition like in Africa and are unable to get health care and helping those people in such a condition is really a great work and such a great work can bring a change in someone's life and this is what really inspires me.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is an organization that helps abused and neglected animals. Their mission is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” The ASPCA is making a positive impact to the world because they are rescuing homeless and mistreated animals and providing them with a second chance to have a better life. Many of these animals have broken bones and illnesses from neglect and the ASPCA gives them veterinarian care to treat these broken bones and illnesses. The ASPCA has inspired me to help abused animals and to never treat an animal harshly. It also has influenced me to start my own dog rescue when I get older in order to save dogs from being euthanized. I love dogs and want to do what I can to save them from abuse and mistreatment.
Charity:Water is a Non- profit organization that I learned about from a friend at church. The main goal of the organization is to provide clean drinking water to developing countries by building wells and filter systems. This organization was found by Scott Harrison in 2006, and has helped provide clean drinking water to 19 countries with 3,962 different projects. The majority of these countries are found in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The main reason for bringing clean, safe drinking water to these villages is to prevent diseases infecting the villagers. The water they consume is filled with bacteria such as E.Coli, Hepatitis A, and cholera, which can cause diarrhea, dehydration, and also death. Every 19 seconds, a mother loses her child to diseases caused by unsafe drinking water. Another reason for providing clean drinking water to these families, is so that parents can send more children to school. In Africa, people spend 40 billion hours alone every year fetching water from swamps and unsanitary lakes. A majority of these fetchers are mothers and children. This prevents children from going to school, earning an education, and becoming successful. Also, the 3 hour walk to fetch water from a swamp puts a great amount of pain to the mother, who must walk with the 40 pound jug on her backs all the way home. These mothers are also susceptible to sexual assault and attack on the 3 hour walk home. The providing of clean water nearby will reduce these risks, and give mothers more time to care for their families. The main way Charity:Water gets people to donate is through social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. For my friend's 19th birthday, he set up a site on Charity:Water and told people to donate $19 to the organization or however much they desired. He reached his goal of $1,500, and provided clean drinking water for a village in Africa. This donation made a huge difference because $20 provides clean, safe drinking water to a person for 20 years. I found this organization very inspirational because it comes from the good of people's hearts, and there are no profits made for the company building the wells. I hope to make a site for my 18th birthday, and I will encourage people to donate to this amazing cause!
I recently attended a concert and the artist mentioned an organization that he donates to called the Mocha Club. This is a nonprofit organization that encourages people to donate $7 a month (the average cost of giving up two cups of coffee) to your choice of one of their five main projects. These include Clean Water, Education, Child Mothers + Women at Risk, Orphan Care + Vulnerable Children, and HIV/AIDS + Healthcare. This organization’s vision is to provide a way for people who don’t have thousands of dollars to make a difference in Africa. I think this is really great because it makes donating very accessible. Not to mention it’s a clever idea because we all are guilty of buying overpriced coffees or other drinks of choice at least twice in one month. This organization makes it easy for anyone to get involved. The Director of The Mocha Club, Barrett Ward, was on a trip in Africa and his group members mentioned that they were frustrated because they felt confined by their inability to make an impact in Africa. This is a true statement because there a lot of people that want to help with the problems in Africa but sometimes don’t have enough money to donate as much as they would like to. The Mocha Club makes it easy for anyone to get involved, and you can even get your friends involved. If you want to make a difference in Africa and are willing to give up two cups of coffee a month, this is a great organization for you!
I go to St. Ann's Catholic church and I am very close to Nic Frank our youth minister. Nic recently got married and i attend a bible study at his house every Monday. He told us a couple of weeks ago that he was moving to Louisiana to help a town that is still racially separated. The town has two Catholic churches one for black people and the other for white. His wife and him are going to help build a sense of community and eventually combine the two churches. He receives little pay for this act of kindness. The KKK is still very active in this part of Louisiana so this job will not be easy. They are moving there this December and do not know one person there. They are very nervous but know its what God has planned for them.
Compassion International is an amazing organization created by Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952. It is a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. The organization travels around the world reaching out to people who are able and would like to sponsor children in need. My sister and I sponsor a young boy in Ethiopia, named Jacob. We pay a small fee of $40 dollars a month to provide everything this little boy needs. We also get to write letters back and forth to Jacob allowing us to get to know one another. We send gifts to him on his birthday and other holidays as well. This Organization inspires me because it is providing an easy way to help people across the world. I encourage all of you to visit their website and think about sponsoring a young child of your own!
A group that really inspires me is the non-profit charity organization called Locks of Love. This charity provides hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children under the age of 21 who have long term medical hair loss due to their diagnoses. The most prominent medical condition seen by Locks of Love is the uncurable disease alopecia areata. Many kids suffer from this and from all types of cancer which causes hair loss because of the treatment they undergo, chemotherapy and radiation. A couple years ago I grew my hair out and cut 12 inches off to be donated to this organization so they can be used to make a hair prosthetic or for someone in need. They inspired me to give my hair because I cannot imagine being a young girl and having no hair. This group is making a positive impact on the world because they are restoring self-confidence, normalcy, and a sense of self back to those children who need it most. A sick child does not deserve to suffer from being self-conscious, but they instead deserve to be happy with who they are on the outside as well as the inside. Locks of Love is a great organization that accepts all hair and hair lengths in order to provide a hairpiece for a helpless child.
WWF, World Wildlife Fund is a great organization that helps protect the future of nature. Their mission is to conserve nature and reduce the treats that happen to the life on Earth. WWF is making a positive impact to the world because they work to protect endangered species, so that they can live and bring something to Earth. If it were not for WWF the endangered species would be dying right now. They also are saving 19 places in the world like the rain forest, diverse freshwater systems, varied coral reefs, and productive fishing grounds. Which are the homes of some endangered species. This organization really inspires me to be more environmental friendly and wanting to go greener. I love animals and WWF really opens my eyes about the endangered species and how you can help save them.
I’m inspired by the group (actually a small private company) called Intellectual Ventures. I read about IV in the book SuperFreakonomics and I thought they had cool ideas. They work to patent inventions and try to fix global problems. One of the things they’re concerned with is Global Warming and climate change. I know Bill Gates is a big supporter of them. But I like how they actually try to think through and solve problems with science. I think science is very important to our country and is a big contributor to our success as a nation, so I think IV has a good idea.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is an organization founded in 1970 to improve the lives of children, adolescents, and adults with Type-one Diabetes. Since being created in 1970 JDRF has donated more than 1.5 billion dollars in the fight to find a cure and better treatment for people suffering from Type-one Diabetes. This 1.5 billion dollars has funded research projects in over 19 countries and also funded over 40 human clinical trials. This organization means a lot to me because I myself have had Type-one Diabetes since I was 15 and have actually taken part in a clinical trial to help find a cure for Type-one Diabetes. JDRF gives me hope that they will find a cure for Type-one Diabetes. So maybe someday I won’t have to take insulin anymore, and they will bring a major diseases life to an end.
Zach Hunter Started a campaing called Loose Change to Loosen Chains. This is an effort to raise awareness of modern day slavery and to rescue the victims of slavery and other forms of oppresion. Surprisingly there are more slaves in the world today then there were when slave trading was legal. Whats amazing about zach Hunter, and how he is inspiring, is that he was 12 years old when he started this campaing, in 2002. In seventh grade when he started to learn about slavery in history he got so upset about it he wished he could go back and have fought for them. When he discoverd though that slvery is still prevelant in todays society he wanted to do something. Thats when him and his school raised over $8,500 dollars in one year thorugh his Loose Change to Loosen Chains. This has made such an impact through out the world; schools all over now support this campaing and are changing lives forever.
Operation Smile is an organization that assists countires that are in need with cleft lip and palate surgeries for children. It's a medical service organization almost like Mercy Ship. Not only do people volunteer their time and money to do such things, but they also help spread education about how to prevent such things for the future. They have done over 150,000 surgeries in over 60 countries. This organization is inspiring because people volunteer with no pay. They volunteer their time and skills to not only give back physically but also mentally with education. Not only does their service help the physical health of these unfortunate kids, but it brings them to have another reason to smile. These smiles spread mental joy and a reason for the organization to keep going. They make a difference in the lives of the children and their families. Not only does it inspire me to study more but it also helps me to remember the real reason on why medical professions are so important.
The National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery serves to defend the rights of those who require aid in various forms such as health care (Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security) as well as those unable to speak for themselves due to mental illness or disability. They strive to reform health care so that it better helps those that they speak for as well as advocating and announcing new forms of humane treatment for mental illnesses such as their recent attention being brought in their site to a new method of treatment for schizophrenia. Their focus and care with these people certainly does a great service to their community and also catches my eye as it focuses on the psychology and psychiatry department. I am curious as to whether their reform attempts will be made successful, but as far as I can see they are certainly beyond doubt doing their part in making the world a better and more accepting place for people who face hardship that oftentimes are forgotten and left behind.
TOMS is an organization that inspires me. For every pair of shoes that you buy, TOMS will donate a pair to a child in a developing country. Many of the children in deleloping countries grow up barefoot. This puts them at serious risk to contract diseases. They can also get cuts and sores on their feet which can get infected. Shoes are also a school uniform requirement. If a child doesn't have shoes, they cannot go to school and recieve an education. TOMS is making a positive impact on the world by donating shoes to these kids. They keep the children healthy and give them the opportunity to recieve an education. The TOMS organization holds events such as One Day Without Shoes, where people go a day without their shoes in order to raise awareness of the problems that kids in developing countries go through. TOMS is a very interactive organization which makes it easy for people to get involved.
The YMCA is a global organization that inspires me. As an organization, the YMCA provides services and care to local communities and people that promote its mission: "To put Christian Principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all." They provide many services that help people and promote their mission statement such as free memberships for people who cannot afford one so that they may become healthier physically and mentally. Also, they provide services for the mentally impaired such as swim lessons and meets while also allowing for job opportunity for these same mentally impaired individuals. The YMCA uses its profits and donations to give back to the community in a variety of forms such as scholarships and donations. As an organization, the YMCA provides many services that help the community. It's easy to get involved and you can help out by donating or just going up to your local YMCA and asking for opportunities to help. The YMCA inspires me to help out my community.
Irving bible church once a month travels to downtown Dallas to the Shiloh apartments to volunteer their time with the low income families. Middle school and high school students take time out of their day to help feed and spend time with the children. These moment make their day and help them forget about the troubles they have gone through in the past. I love helping people and I hope to continue missionary trips with my church.
Ghana, West Africa Water Well Penny Drive is a drive to collect pennies to provide parts of West Africa drinkable water. They ask Churches, Schools, Universities, Organizations, Businesses, Individuals, Societies, Mosque, and Social Clubs to help collect pennies. Although pennies seem like they wont be able to make much of a difference, a few pennies could actually provide a whole family with clean water. That means a few pennies donated a day could keep a family both healthy and happy. This drive doesn't ask for a lot of donations or monthly payments, but just some leftover pennies which makes it distinct from others and easy to do. This drive inspired me because it was surprising to me how much I can do to help just by collecting some left over pennies that I wouldn't bother keeping anyways. Not only was it easy for me to help, but it is also something I can spread around my society to make them more aware of how they could be easily helping families that are in need.
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children saved my little brother's life. He's 15 now, but he was born with a life-threatening heart murmur. The doctor's at Scottish Rite worked long and hard to fix his problem, and now he's a normal kid: playing sports, going to school, and breathing normally. Countless kids around the country are saved here, and their stories along with my brother's are very inspirational indeed.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is one of the groups I think is making a good difference in our society. The ACLU is a group of lawyers who strive to defend the rights us Americans are granted by the Bill of Rights. They were started in the 1920's by lawyers who defended people who were unfairly accused of being communists. They also defended the right for workers unions to organize. Throughout the civil rights era, they fought against laws that were discriminatory against blacks and helped to become a legal platform for many civil rights groups. Later on, they have fought for gay rights, access to abortion, and the seperation of church and state. With their position, they have gained a lot of notoriety by defending unpopular positions and asking whether something violates our first amendment rights. People often compare them to extremist-leftist since they fight many conservative stances. However, they'll defend those who hate them if their right to free speech, expression, or any other right they have is violated. It is this type of altruism that I believe has helped the U.S. advance.
The Make A Wish Foundation is the most inspiring foundation I can think of. They are a foundation that collects donations from anybody who is willing to donate. Their goal is to make one wish come true for every child with special needs, disabilities, and or medical issues. It is a remarkable foundation. Sometimes, if a family is willing to, they will volunteer to fully pay for the child's wish. I like this foundation because they made my sister's wish come true! She was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes about a year ago, she was devastated and depressed. She lost her desire to live, she wanted to die. But my mom and I looked into the Make A Wish foundation and saw that they would give her one wish all expenses paid. Her wish was to go with my mom to kitchen stadium in Holleywood and watch Iron Chef America. They also gave her new knives and pans since she loves to cook. This foundation really inspires me because people who don't even know you or your story are willing to donate their hard earned money to your benefit. It is an awesome foudation that brings joy to little kids!
Abilene Hope Haven Inc. is one of the most inspiring foundations I can think of. They are a foundation, founded in 1994, who have served over 2,000 people through their transitional housing program. Hope Haven offers people a place to live up to one year while they work to remedy their homeless situation. They offer people shelter, food, transportation, childcare, and supportive services. Their goal is for their residents is to become self-sufficient, responsible and productive members of the Abilene community in Texas. Not only in the community, but through out the United States.
AmeriCares is one of the most inspiring non profit groups. AmeriCares is an organization that gives aid during disasters and calamities. AmeriCares was started by Robert Macauley when a plane went down in vietnam with 243 orphaned children and a third died in the crash. The others, which were critically injured, could not be rescued until 10 days because the U.S. government said it was too risky. Robert Macauley ended up mortgaging his house and chartered a Boeing 747 to got to Vietnam and rescue the children. This is very inspiring because it showed that 1 person was going to risk his life savings to help orphans. The thought of helping that many orphans is truly great because if it was not for Robert, children with a future would not have lived. This organization is very inspiring because it has free clinics to treat the sick that cannot afford healthcare and are living in dire circumstances. This organization also provides people who are homeless with free food. AmeriCares is an organization by Americans that cares for people around the world. This is a great organization.
The organization that inspires me is the lung cancer alliance (LCA). Raising awareness for lung cancer is very important for me because my grandpa has stage 4 lung cancer and my mom, aunt, and uncle have experienced second hand smoke for most of their lives and have a high chance of getting lung cancer. What the lung cancer alliance does is host vigils to raise money for awareness. They are hosted across the country and people affected by or wanting to help, and they all come together during the vigil. I am hoping to be able to attend one next year. The lung cancer alliance works with china to get more countries involved in awareness. They also hosts screenings across the country to keep people aware and tested for lung cancer. What they are doing for lung cancer is really making a difference, which is what organizations are all about. You can also donate on their website at anytime and host a vigil by contacting them through their website lungcanceralliance.org. Hosting a vigil is not the only way to help. Many people also host marathons and runs as a way to help the LCA. Since lung cancer is the most common type of cancer, it is really important that something be done to raise awareness not only within our country, but across the world.
Invisible children is the organization that inspires me the most. I'm definitely guilty in getting so caught up in my own life that i forget about other people around the world that are in need. There are children in Uganda and other African countries that that don't even have the basic necessities in order to survive. Invisible Children is a great organization because it helps out these kids. Just donating a dollar helps add up to raise enough money to buy a well and provide them with sanitary water. It's the little things in life that we take for granted. This organization has led to the creation of many other inspiring organizations. Invisible children has caused me to be more conscious of other people and to give more in my daily life.
About a couple weeks ago i was in Florida for an Academy showcase.Which the directors of the assosation had a huge assembly to introduce all the players to this program called SPENSA its a program that it designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl of ages 5-21 who has a mental or physical disability. There hope to over the next few years to have hundreds of kids around the nation with mental disablities the opportunity to become a valued and successful member of the soccer community. This program is free of charge to all of these special children. The program is funded through the generous donations of individuals, corporations and area soccer clubs. It really inspried me beacause it gives these kids a oppertunity to play just like any other kid.Even though there interactions aren't the same as everyone else they can still do the sport they love to play.It doesn matter how big, tall ,small or if you have a disablitlty soccer is anyones sport. So everyone should check it out and support it.
I'm inspired by the non-profit organization called Habitat for Humanity. The goal for this organization is to build houses for people who are homeless and are facing poverty. A couple of months ago my mom helped out this organization by building a home for a family in the Dallas area, and when she showed me the pictures of her experience, I thought that it was wonderful that there were so many people who were willing to give up their free time in order to build a house for someone in their local community. Also seeing how happy the family was with their new house inspired me to get involved in my community and find ways that I can help out people in need.
Ian Somerhalder is a person that inspires me. Most people know him as the cute vampire in the show Vampire Diaries, but besides being an actor he has really reached out to many communities around the world. He created the Ian Somerhalder Association and this association is made specifically to make animal rights more aware around the world. His main goal is to make everything (plants, animals, and humans) combine into one and show appreciation for all living things on this planet. It is a non-profit organization that distributes funds and resources towards global conservation and ending animal cruelty. This is really impactful to me because I believe this point he is trying to get across is vital for everyone to participate in around the world and it inspires me to take everything on this planet in consideration and not only focus on us humans but also on the environment and animals. It's also impactful because it shows me how one person can make a really big difference world wide and it makes me feel like everyone has the opportunity to make a mark on this Earth.

ReplyDeleteI go to St.
ReplyDeleteCompassion International is an amazing organization created by Rev.
ReplyDeleteA group that really inspires me is the non-profit charity organization called Locks of Love.
ReplyDeleteWWF, World Wildlife Fund is a great organization that helps protect the future of nature.
ReplyDeleteI’m inspired by the group (actually a small private company) called Intellectual Ventures.
ReplyDeleteThe Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is an organization founded in 1970 to improve the lives of children, adolescents, and adults with Type-one Diabetes.
ReplyDeleteZach Hunter Started a campaing called Loose Change to Loosen Chains.
ReplyDeleteOperation Smile is an organization that assists countires that are in need with cleft lip and palate surgeries for children.
ReplyDeleteThe National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery serves to defend the rights of those who require aid in various forms such as health care (Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security) as well as those unable to speak for themselves due to mental illness or disability.
ReplyDeleteTOMS is an organization that inspires me.
ReplyDeleteThe YMCA is a global organization that inspires me.
ReplyDeleteIrving bible church once a month travels to downtown Dallas to the Shiloh apartments to volunteer their time with the low income families. Middle school and high school students take time out of their day to help feed and spend time with the children. These moment make their day and help them forget about the troubles they have gone through in the past. I love helping people and I hope to continue missionary trips with my church.
ReplyDeleteGhana, West Africa Water Well Penny Drive is a drive to collect pennies to provide parts of West Africa drinkable water.
ReplyDeleteTexas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children saved my little brother's life.
ReplyDeleteThe American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is one of the groups I think is making a good difference in our society. It is this type of altruism that I believe has helped the U.S. advance.
ReplyDeleteThe Make A Wish Foundation is the most inspiring foundation I can think of.
ReplyDeleteAbilene Hope Haven Inc. is one of the most inspiring foundations I can think of.
ReplyDeleteAmeriCares is one of the most inspiring non profit groups.
ReplyDeleteThe organization that inspires me is the lung cancer alliance (LCA).
ReplyDeleteInvisible children is the organization that inspires me the most.
ReplyDeleteAbout a couple weeks ago i was in Florida for an Academy showcase.Which the directors of the assosation had a huge assembly to introduce all the players to this program called SPENSA its a program that it designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl of ages 5-21 who has a mental or physical disability.
ReplyDeleteI'm inspired by the non-profit organization called Habitat for Humanity.
ReplyDeleteIan Somerhalder is a person that inspires me.
