I talked with a medical doctor in Dallas, Texas about the needs of people in the Dallas community. He said that many illnesses such as influenza and hepatitis could be easily avoided by simply receiving a vaccination. He also said that vaccines are under used which is why so many people contract these diseases so easily. If Coppell, and really Dallas in general, could distribute more of these vaccines, then the people in Dallas would be healthier and less prone to contracting illnesses. It seems that the importance of vaccinations has been lost between the healthcare providers and the general public.
He also said that Obesity is one of the fastest growing problems and that with more exercise and healthier foods, as well as smaller portions of food, people could easily prevent obesity. Our community should promote more exercise driven activities to help people get in shape, as well as offer more opportunities such as Food Day, to show people that healthy foods can also taste good. Our community needs to focus on healthier food options as opposed to fast food restaurants. It seems that every year a new fast food place opens up, which only contributes to the growing problem of obesity.
Our community really needs to focus on helping people get the necessary vaccines to stay healthy, as well as focus on keeping people in shape – by promoting exercise and avoiding new fast food places – so that they can live longer and healthier lives.
I interviewed a nurse and she said that, everyone needs to start eating more healthy if they want a better and longer life style. They also need to workout regularly. She thinks that Coppell is a very wealthy community, having said that, she thinks we all need to stop thinking we are all so wealthy and start helping each other. Like donating food, clothing and helping others with their health care.
I talked to my doctor who is located at the Las Colinas Medical Center. I asked what the most common thing she sees people come in for. She told me she sees is runny nose, congestion, high blood pressure and sinus infections. She said the best thing to do is stay healthy, eat healthy, wash your hands regularly, just the basic stuff people should do on a regular basis. The only thing to do is just that and hope for a better future.
Every community has health issues so I spoke with one of the school nurses at Coppell High School about what needs to be done to better the health of the community. She feels that dental care and health care are hard to come by for those who don't have enough money to afford them and, it would be a good idea to have a fund raiser to support those in need and offer them free dental and medical care.
We started talking about transportation in our community and she felt that kids needed to have a healthier way of getting to school. If we create a bike lane for the kids on the road maybe the kids would be more motivated to take a bike to school, this of coarse would cause people to drink more water and stay hydrated.
Our conversation concluded with discussion of the school cafeteria. She Thinks it would be a good idea to to eliminate fatty foods form the menu and replace it with healthier foods. Healthier foods a new transportation and a great new health and dental care fundraiser sounded like pretty good improvements to me. These things would definitely make Coppell a better place.
I talked to one of the high school’s athletic trainers. She works with kids of the community every day and believes that a growing problem in our community is obesity. She said that people in our community need to eat healthier instead of eating fast-food every day. Another Idea she brought up in the interview is to build more bike lanes in the roads and more bike trails through Coppell. She believes that building these trails will encourage more people to start biking and join in the fight against obesity.
I interviewed a Medical Assistant/ Nurse at Coppell Pediatrics Center. She thought that there should be adjustments to the dietary habits in the community as well as better health advertising, such as gyms. It is important for students to examine their eating habits as well as their exercise habits so they can stay healthy. This includes changing the menus at schools because the majority of students buy lunch from school and are exposed to fatty meals with high amounts of sugar and cholesterol. Also, the Nurse thought that students should practice good hygiene to prevent infections and diseases from becoming epidemics in the community. With the amount of exposure the students have with one another, it easy easy for them to spread germs and infect others.
She also thought there should be more urgent care facilities in the community so that people can get care more efficiently. We also touched on the subject of creating more pediatrician offices in Coppell because there are not many options in the community. Additionally, She mentioned the need to inform people of vaccines and urge them to get their vaccines done in order to stay healthy.
The nurse concluded with the thought that Coppell could use a hospital so that patients would have more options as to where they could go for medical attention. Baylor Irving is one of the closest hospitals to the community, yet it is a good drive away from many residences.
I interviewed my mom who is a pediatric physical therapist. I asked her what are common needs in the community of Coppell. She stated that vaccines for all children would help decrease illnesses such as the flu, hepatitus, and meningitis which could lead to more serious problems. Parent instruction such as keeping children home when they have fevers, vomiting, or respiratory infections for at least 24 hours after the symptoms have resolved would decrease the spread of germs to other children and families. Use of antibacterial products can also limit the spread of infection. Healthy habits at home can help grow healthier children. This includes diets with fruits and vegetables as well as lean proteins. These foods provide vitamins, minerals, and necessary nutrients that build healthier bodies that are more resistant to infection. Exercise strengthens our cardiovascular system as well. As a physical therapist, my mom indicated that her patients that are healthier from the start tend to recover more quickly and improve at a faster pace.
I talked to my mom, since she’s a nurse at a medical clinic in The Colony, TX. She sees kids and adults everyday while she’s working and she thinks there is a problem with obesity in our world today. She believes that people need to stop eating at fast-food restaurants, and eat healthier so that we stop this growing problem that we have. She also believed that, we need more people walking to school, if they can. People who live just a few blocks down, could walk to school and get a good exercise, instead of driving and being lazy. I think this is a good idea, because by having more people excersizing, we could have a healthier world.
I was able to speak with a registered nurse from the ER of the Irving Coppell Baylor Hospital. When speaking of this topic, he automatically had an answer. He believed that there really needs to be a way to get education out to the people who aren't health care patients. He said that most people use media in the wrong way and come in the ER thinking they have an non-existent disease. Those who are hurt, they don't know whether to either call 911 or either to go to the ER. They come in expecting them to give them a diagnosis while the ER is only to make sure the patient is stable. Patient education is important is what the nurse said. He was very passionate about how the education is important because most people come in the ER expecting the wrong thing. His input was mainly to create a way for non-health care workers to get information other than the medical shows and internet.
I interviewed my uncle who is a supervisor for ultrasound technicians. He also works as an ultrasound tech and retrains his workers as well. The most common medical encounters he sees are pregnancies. He has the opportunity to witness the growth of a baby inside a woman's womb. Some major problems he has met is attempting to scan for abdominal organs but cannot see it. This is because the patient has a very thick layer of fat. Even on the ultra-light level, the rays can only go so deep pass the fat layers and then to the internal organs. My uncle says that he sees so many patients walk into the hospital that are obese. He says that usually those with obesity also has other medical problems that are enhanced by obesity. Child obesity is the biggest problem right now. He says that we should encourage the younger kids to join sports or at least have a daily exercise routine. One important thing my uncle mentioned was that whatever habit we build as kids will tend to carry on into adulthood. We need to be careful what we eat, watch out for our portions, and maintain a regular exercise routine.
I recently spoke to one of our high school athletic trainers about the health issues in Coppell, and around other cites. He said that obesity is one main health issue. He thinks that is would be a good idea for the city to have more healthy fast food restaurants. To clear up the definition of fast food in this case, it would mean serving healthy foods just as a McDonald's would with unhealthy food. I personally think that this is a great idea for city because many people eat out at lunch in Coppell just as this athletic trainer does, and to have healthy fast food restaurants could prove to be a big health benefit in the long run.
After consulting with my dad, who is a pediatric gastroenterologist, he told me that obesity is a large issue throughout the Dallas area. This occurrence is largely due to peoples lack of time, and due to this they are forced to simply look for the more convenient method of feeding yourself, and the answer is undeniably fast food. Although obesity is a hazardous result to exclusively consuming fast food, in addition to this a deficiency for zinc, chromium and B vitamins accompany excessive fast food consumption. However, as a doctor of pediatrics, he typically does not encounter patients with extremely high cholesterol or obese children, but through having a diet of fast food in childhood, they develop an unhealthy pattern of eating which will undoubtedly result in future health issues.
