What's Going On?

What is going on in Coppell that you can be a part of?  What organizations are located in the area that work to improve our environment and health?  Who is giving back to the community?  In what ways are they making Coppell a great place to live?

  1. This year Coppell Professional Learning is finding ways to partner with Coppell Special Olympics.

As a part of CISD Convocation, we had "photobooths" managed by the iTeam. CISD staff can order their pictures and ALL proceeds will be donated to Coppell Special Olympics.

  2. Ready, Set, Teach! is a group that prepares upperclassman that are interested in becoming education majors for the classroom. They go to elementary and middle schools with a field site teacher and help to teach students. They help the teachers and the schools by helping with field day, teaching the kids, and building relationships with the teacher, principle, students, and other faculty. They help with the turkey drive, different projects at CHS, and many other events.

  3. The Coppell Community Gardens have two locations, one next to the post office and the other next to Town Hall. The gardens are built and run by volunteer gardeners in the area and all the produce from the gardens are donated to the Metrocrest Social Services Food Pantry. Although the gardens are mainly run by the volunteer gardeners, teens are able to volunteer at the gardens every Saturday from 8:30-10 a.m. There they can help with composting, mulching, planting, and harvesting. All volunteers can track their hours at http://www.x2vol.com/.

  4. Coppell has many community opportunities to be a part of especially with helping the environment. EcoCoppell Corps is a way for volunteers to learn about sustainability and green living. The topics the volunteers learn are water protection and conservation, green building and energy efficiency, recycling and household waste, and many other topics. Also, Clean Coppell gets volunteers to help clean up the environment around Coppell. These volunteers pick up trash on Earth Day and Coppell has an Earthfest at the end of the day. EcoCoppell Corps and Clean Coppell are making Coppell a great place to live because they are trying to make Coppell a greener and environmentally safe place to live.

Coppell is planning to have a huge volunteer event called Kid Country 2012. Kid Country 2012 wants the community to help rebuild Kid Country since it is getting older. This is a great way to give back to the community and rebuilding Kid Country will help keep children more active and have a better healthy lifestyle. Kid Country 2012 is also making Coppell a great place to live because it is helping get the community to join together and work on a public park which all children will benefit from.

  5. There are so many wonderful things going on in Coppell. Whether it is improving our environment or health, there are clubs and programs for students to get involved. I have been involved with earth day and clean up Coppell this past summer. These events targeted cleaning up our community and making our environment healthy and clean. It was a great experience and it felt great to give back to the community. My friend Shorjoe Bhattacharya has a club at CHS called eCoppell and it focuses on environmental issues in Coppell. His goal this year for his club, is switching all plastic bags at grocery stores to reusable bags. It is very easy to be involved in clubs like this one, and I recommend doing so for the experience and the purpose. Many kids from elementary to high school are getting involved in our community. They are attending earth day, joining clubs that promote healthy activities and environmental issues, and building gardens to grow healthy food.
One thing that I really like about our schools is that we teach about the environment and health at an early age. Schools have programs that build gardens, grow healthy food, and instruct of to live a healthy life. Coppell now has food markets and a grocery store called Sprouts, which both sell healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables, and natural products. With more and more of these healthy alternative food sources Coppell will become a pure community. Coppell continues to produce more gardens, healthy food stores, and environmental programs. With all these factors, Coppell seems to be the ideal city.

  6. Coppell has many opportunities that allow members of the community to be involved with. For example, there is the Coppell garden which allows members of Coppell to gather and participate in organic farming and learn about healthy ways to help the community of Coppell. In fact, in my environmental class we are participating in an activity that allows us to propose a way to improve Coppell in an environmentally safe way. My group decided to work on starting compost piles in the Coppell Community Garden in order to not let anything go to waste and to have an organic fertilizer for the plants. It also would promote for other people to make their own compost piles at their house. There are also organizations/clubs in the high school that work to improve the environment and our health. I have been involved in the eCoppell club and it had similar ideas to make Coppell a better place to live in and making it more environmentally sustainable. Overall kids at the high school and community members are having a trade off of giving back and finding a middle ground between gaining from the environment and giving back to the environment as well. This is making Coppell a better place to live because it is making more people environmentally aware of their surroundings and allowing them to take steps in their own private homes to improve our environment and health.

  7. There are so many ways that the community is/can be involved in making Coppell a better place to live including: Keep Coppell Beautiful Board, Adopt-a-Location, Coppell Community Garden, Coppell Farmers Market, EcoCoppell Corp, Green Team Recognition, and Clean Coppell.
Keep Coppell Beautiful tries to involve individuals and business in the community to promote the education of and activities that encourage waste reduction, environmental sustainability, etc. Adopt-a-Location's purpose is to encourage businesses, groups, and organizations to volunteer to pick up letter along the roads and parks all over Coppell. I know that the Interact Club participates in this (as I am President), partnered with its sponsoring organization, the Coppell Rotary Club. The road that we are responsible for (or at least what it was last year) is the section of Southwestern Blvd right by Pinkerton Elementary School. The Coppell Community Garden provides community gardens, a farmers market, and environmental education. Volunteers help make a healthy community by growing and donating organic produce to those in need, by providing a market for locally grown food, and by teaching sustainable practices. EcoCoppell Corps is a group of volunteers that have been through training on green and sustainable living. They have committed to being green and extending that ideal to the rest of the community through involvement programs. The purpose of the Coppell Green Team is to promote environmental awareness and sustainable behavior by actively implementing environmental sustainable practices, procedures, and operations and by complying with all local environmental requirements.
There are also community programs that involve the youth. The Keep Coppell Beautiful Board has youth positions, as does the Coppell Community Garden Board. Every Saturday 8 am to 10 am, youth can go to either community garden and help out. There are so many different ways that the people of Coppell can contribute to making their city a better place, and they are available to everyone.

  8. Keep Coppell Beautiful is a way for citizens of Coppell to give back. This program has many projects; one being Adopt- a- Location. Through this project the organization has provided an opportunity for businesses, churches, girl/boy scout troops, and other groups to spread throughout Coppell picking up litter and striving to make Coppell a more beautiful, and healthier environment. Through picking up trash along roads, parks, neighborhoods, and businesses provides animals, plants, and all of us with a cleaner environment. This can help lead to living healthier lives. I have been involved in this project since middle school with my church, and it has provided a chance for me to bond with those that I work with while giving back community and environment. If anyone is interested in this project go online to the Coppell website and click Adopt-a- Location to get started.

  9. Here in Coppell there are various ways in which we can come together to improve our environment and health. One thing that Coppell has been doing for a while now to improve health is Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an event that takes place once every year at Wagon-Wheel Park, where everyone comes together to stand up against cancer. People walk the course to earn donations that are put towards the fight against cancer. Relay for life makes Coppell a great place to live because it shows how prominent we are in aiding those who suffer and who have suffered from cancer as well as remembering those who did not survive their fight against cancer. It is really cool to see how many people actually care and participate in Relay for Life each year.

  10. Although Coppell may be a small city, there are many clubs and organizations in this community that everybody can join to help improve our environment and health! There is an organization called The Bradley O'Martin Melanoma Foundation that the community of Coppell takes part in. This organization works to raise money and awareness to help treat and prevent the melanoma disease. Everybody is able to volunteer so that the entire community will be able to work together and help out. Volunteers can simply help with fundraising activities throughout the year. They are making Coppell a better place to live because they are raising awareness about melanoma. Also by raising funds, the organization is donating and helping out Coppell residents who may have the disease. Also, Coppell has their annual 5K run which benefits Special Olymics. This run/walk is an awesome way for community members to help other residents out, as well as improve their own health and fitness. Lastly, there are many clubs in Coppell that help with the environment. The Sierra Club at CHS, for example, works to promote fundamental knowledge and awareness of environmental issues. Through this club, students are able to learn about keeping their earth clean. They are also able to discover new ways to go green and lower their carbon footprint.

  11. Coppell has several opportunities for community involvement in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. For example, Relay for Life is held every year in April. The money that participants raise for Relay for Life pays for the parts of fighting cancer that are usually forgotten, such as providing patients with rides to treatment centers and lodging for cancer patients who have to undergo treatment away from home. It also raises awareness within the community by reaching all members of the community with participants’ fundraising efforts. Last year, Coppell High School started a new Relay for Life club specifically geared towards high-schoolers fundraising for Relay for Life. This new club brought many new teen participants to Relay for Life, and it helped spread the word to a larger group of people. On a smaller scale than Relay for Life, Coppell also has organizations such as the Bradley O’Martin Melanoma Foundation, Coppell Farmers Market, and the LiveStrong class at the YMCA. This last organization helps both cancer patients and survivors improve their health and increase their quality of fitness. By receiving educational material and going through the 12–week strength training program, LiveStrong at the YMCA is helping cancer patients maintain a strong, healthy lifestyle.

  12. Starting November 3rd the Coppell wrestling club (for elementary and middle school students) will have its first practice. This will take place in the CHS Wrestling room (located in the back of the school, near the small gym). The elementary school practice will go from 5:30pm-6:30pm, and the middle school practice will go from 6:30pm-8pm. The practices are on Monday and Thursday each week. The season starts in January and ends mid-February.

This is a great way to get our youth of coppell to get in shape and improve their health. Wrestling is a great way to build strength and to improve your cardio. I have been in wrestling for four years and I have seen a major improvement in my physical state. I have also participated in this wrestling club and it is lots of fun. It also makes me happy because now my 5 year old brother is joining and I think he will become even more of a monster (I call him monster because he is tall and strong for a 5 year old).
This will also be good for him to get rid of some excess energy. Overall I love this program and the sport of wrestling.

  13. The Coppell Community Gardens is a program that provides environmental education, community gardens, and a farmers market. The great thing about the gardens is that it is completely ran by volunteers. Through Adopt-A-Plot, volunteers get the opportunity to learn about organic gardening which is good for our health and the environment. Volunteers are also educated about composting. Compost bins are worked weekly by volunteers and master composters to reduce organic matter and recycle it into a valuable soil amendment which is good for the environment. The food grown at the gardens is then sold in the farmers market. This gives people in the community the opportunity to buy fresh fruit and vegetables that are grown organically, which are much healthier. The gardens give back to the community by donating organic produce to those in need. Every Saturday they donate their produce to the local food pantry. This helps make Coppell a great place to live because it gives community members the opportunity to create a healthier life style for them and for others.

  14. Though I just moved to Coppell, I have heard about many opportunities in Coppell that bring many people together. One of the many event going on in Coppell that I can be a part of is Relay for Life, Coppell Farmers market, community garden, and many events held at universities. Relay for life is an opportunity for the community to get together to celebrate the many milestones that many had to over comer through the years. To help the ones that have cancer to stay strong and to know there are many who care about them. To congratulate the survivors for all they have been through and to unite a large family. An organization that is giving back to the community is The Leukemia and Lymphoma foundation, by doing pennies for patients about 85% of the money collected is going to research and helping Coppell patients with their medical bills. By having a farmers market they are making Coppell a great place to live because they invite the residence of the city to come and support local farmers. Not only are we profiting from it by getting fresh, organic, and tasty foods from the farmers, they we growing the business's of the community. All though I have been here for less than 3 months I am already happy to be a part of such an amazing community.

  15. There are many of ways to get involved in the community in Coppell. One of the many is right here at CHS with the Satainabilty Expo. After TAKS testing theres always opportunities to sign up and get involved into something. They have almost 30+ different topics and issues to get involved with that promote saving our community and many other things. Many students every year get to pick the expo that they would like and you can do do as much as you want with it. They're making Coppell a great place to live by giving back to the community that creates a welcoming feel to Coppell. And consistently helping out with anything and everything around the area.

  16. There are many different types of ways to get involved in the community. Everyday Coppell there is a chance that you can help out and bring this community closer together for a good cause. 2 years in a row i have participated in relay for life and thought it was a great experience to go out and participate in the change here in Coppell. It amazes me how many people come out and participate in things like this, in the case of relay for earning money for people with cancer around the world. Its so powerful knowing that by helping out and having a good time you are saving a life. Relay for life is just an example of one of the many things to choose from and i am glad that here in our town i have such great opportunities to be a part of an amazing change and give back.

    Healthy Options

Coppell, Texas has many restaurants and food options to deal with hunger pains. Although just by driving through Coppell one is attracted to the less health choices such as; Wendy’s, Taco Bell, and Jack in the Box. These stores are on the main roads, which are ever hard to miss with all the traffic running through constantly. The healthier options are less noticeable, but are just as, if not tastier. These shops would include HealthyMe, Market Street and Sprouts. Market Street has a salad bar with freshly cut chicken meat, fruit salad, soups, etc. Sprouts sell all organic grocery needs and housing items. Also, Coppell has a Farmers Market where local farmers come to sell their fresh fruit and other foods. This is open to the public every Saturday morning from. The purpose of this Farmers Market is to educate kids on healthy food choices and to give their parents the option to buy the more nutrient full foods. Another option for parents to help their kids be more active and healthy is Kidz Muze. This is an indoor play area for the younger generation to get out of the house and move around. Parks, playgrounds and other outdoor activities are available to release the kid’s energy. Coppell is one of the healthiest cities in our area, you just might have to try a little harder to find the better options.
