Over the course of this school year, you will be looking at ways to improve your health, wellness, fitness, diet, and the health of those around you.  Do you know anyone that has been affected by negative lifestyle choices?  Bad genetics?  Bad luck?  Could changing habits decrease chances of being sick? Could being more actively involved increase your energy level?  To start off the year, focus on a reason you need to improve your habits.  How has your life been affected by diet, health, wellness, fitness, illness, etc.?

  1. Heart disease and low blood sugar run rampant in my family’s genes, of those two I have exhibited signs of the latter. It doesn’t help in the slightest that I’ve expressed the “freak gene” that occurs once in every other generation in which my metabolism is higher than normal and results in an unhealthily-low average weight.

    Diet comes into play big-time in my life, as I have to make a conscious decision to eat foods that are high in carbs and can at least match my metabolism so that my weight is maintained. This means more or less an effort on my part to eat plenty of pasta, bread, and other things while remembering to eat enough so that I have enough energy for the day, and even having to stockpile energy the day or morning prior when I know at some point in the day I have to do something requiring considerable effort, such as taekwondo, so that I can have just as much energy as others and not burn out almost immediately.

  2. Hey my name is Elliott Tracy. My life has been greatly affected by health issues and dietary habits. I was born with a genetic disease call Cystic fibrosis. It is a respiratory and digestive disease that affects how I absorb certain nutrients, especially fat. I have to take certain medicine that act upon those certain nutrients to help absorb them. My sister also has it too, along with diabetes. My moms’ side of the family has had a really bad track record with heart and lung diseases. Also with diabetes. But over the years my family and I have managed to stay healthy and stay out of the hospital.

  3. My dad has Celiac disease- he was diagnosed a few years ago. He follows a gluten-free diet, and we think it is genetic. My dad also had basil skin cancer cells on his nose that he recently got removed, which is also genetic. I think changing bad habits like going out in the sun without sunscreen or not going to the doctor about health problems that turn into more serious problems could decrease chances of being sick. Also, being more actively involved could increase energy level- for example when you work out, you are actually supposed to have more energy afterwards. My life is surrounded by diet and fitness. I dance 21 hours a week and work out everyday on top of that, so to maintain that lifestyle I have to eat healthy.

  4. Changing habits could definitely decrease your chances of getting sick whether it’s eating habits, working out habits, and even sleeping habits. By eating the suggested amounts of healthy foods daily, your body gains the nutrients and energy it needs. Working out regularly can also improve your health by burning calories and preventing yourself from obesity. Although it’s hard to believe, good sleeping habits can also improve heath if you sleep for a certain amount of hours. Being more actively involved can certainly increase your energy level because the more regularly you exercise, the more stamina and endurance your body has. My life hasn’t been affected by dieting and illness, but I enjoy working out and believe it’s important to do some form of exercise daily.

  5. In the Cook family, there are quite a few bad genes. My grandpa on my mom’s side and my dad have had several spots of skin cancer that were removed which, in order to prevent, would be the obvious stay out of the sun. My grandpa also has high cholesterol which runs in the family from past generations. And in addition, my dad has high blood pressure, so the gene pool is a big factor in the health of my family. Since the members in my family have been diagnosed with these diseases, they have started eating better; they eat fewer foods containing high fat contents and changed some of the products they cook with to low fat or low cholesterol such as butter. For my own health, since I work out a lot which can help prevent these diseases, I can watch more carefully what I eat to ensure that I can put off these diseases as long as I can if I’m destined to get them.

  6. Throughout the past few years, I have noticed within my family that we have a history of high blood pressure and cholesterol. These problems are a result of genetics as well as bad diet habits and stress. My dad, my aunt, and my grandma all have a history of high cholesterol. This is because of not only genetics, but also a habit of not eating right. Because we have very busy lives, my family tends to eat fast food a few times a week, and the foods we choose are high in sodium. This bad eating habit is a big reason why we have high cholesterol. My mom’s side of the family has high blood pressure. High blood pressure makes people tired, so it is important to be more actively involved so you don’t become lazy. Because of my family’s history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol, it is important that I eat right, not eat fast food, and be more active so that I can prevent these things from happening.

  7. My aunt Lynn was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the spring of 2009. She isn’t over weight, exercises daily, doesn’t make bad nutritional choices but simply just had bad luck. Diabetes is caused by a problem in the way your body makes or uses insulin. Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and later used for energy. She has to manually inject the insulin into her blood stream via needle twice daily. Family history and genes play a large role in type 2 diabetes. Low activity level, poor diet, and excess body weight around the waist increase your risk. You may wonder why or how she could possibly get diabetes with such good health and nutrition choices? Her Mom and Dad, immediate family, both were diagnosed with diabetes due to weight issues therefore; it was inevitable for her to receive this disease due to genetics. Being more actively involved does increase your energy level, and reduce your risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes. So, from then on I strive to do all that I can being more active and making smart nutritional decisions, because no one deserves to go through what she had to.

  8. My family has a history of diabetes; this has made me watch how I eat. I try to be more active with my life and this has raised my energy level, which has made me a healthier person. If I just sat a home all day I would get very bored, but most of all lazy. My body would become slow and fatigued. The lifestyle and diet choices one makes will affect their future health and happiness.
    Genetics are a major role in the disease people can contract, however traits are not the only attraction for diseases. Diet, even as a child is important. A high sugar intake will increase the risk of diabetes. High fat contain can increase heart failure and so on.
    The ways to help my community become healthier would include: no business for the fast food restaurants and healthier food choices at school, active/workout groups, and even instead of driving to a destination…walk.

  9. In 1992, my mom’s dermatologist found a cancerous spot on her back. Luckily, it was removable and she went in and was able to get it taken care of. Just this year, again her doctor found another cancerous spot. She was lucky enough that this spot, too, was removable and she had it eliminated without any problems. I asked her later why it had come back. She explained to me how she never wore sunscreen or took very good care of her skin as a child. This makes me really curious about skin cancer and what exactly causes it. Why is sunscreen so important? I’m curious on how the sun causes a disease in the skin. I know that wearing sunscreen more will decrease the chances of getting skin cancer.

  10. Both sides of my family were diagnosed with skin cancer. I have had three close relatives pass away from it, and both of my parents have had cases of it removed from their bodies. Unfortunately, going to the tanning beds is one of my weaknesses. Considering my family's history of skin cancer, i already have a higher chance of getting it, so this is one bad habit i really need to kick. My fathers side also has a long history of heart disease. My grandfather has now had multiple heart surgeries, and now has a machine attached to his heart, underneath his skin, that helps his heart beat regularly. This increased risk of heart disease means i really need to be watching what i eat and trying to exercise as often as possible.

  11. I’m Rachael Pius and many health issues in my family tree have affected my family. My Moms side of the family has and breast cancer and eye cancer. Also my Dad has celiac disease, which is where you cant eat foods with wheat in them, and it has also gotten an affect on my younger brother and me. I know I can’t really help the genetics in cancers, but for keeping gluten free my family and I could eat more organic foods and less wheat. Also too much wheat is bad for you so it would also be a good thing to slim down on wheat because it would help with our diets. To maintain these diets my dad has to shop at different grocery stores like, Sprouts, whole foods (healthier options). To help others with this same thing an helping them maintain this diet, they should go to different grocery stores or something simpler like if you are having a hamburger eat it without the bread. Doing simple things like this will decrease the amount of gluten into your body and if you cleanse yourself out of gluten for a couple of months then you can go back to occasionally eating some gluten, and you will have a healthier diet too.

  12. Making a difference in your life will definitely increase your heath. Whether it be getting extra exercise, catching up on sleep, or making smarter food choices. Working out is a great way to control your weight, improve your mood, and boost energy. Sleeping longer hours helps regulate the need for eating, drinking ,and breathing, which provides a vital role in physical and mental heath. Making smarter food choices helps reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
    Sickness hasn't affected my life, but keeping a healthy way of life is important to me.

  13. Changing your habits can definitely decrease your chances of becoming obese. People need to change their bad habits to good habits. It can be as simple as, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or just drinking water instead of sodas. Being more active can increase your energy level, which means that you will be more active so that you won’t sit around all day and not do anything. I do not know anyone who actually suffers from obesity. But I see people everyday that suffer from it, and all it takes is a little dedication to get up and be active. Some habits that I can change to become healthy and to stay active is, not to watch too much television. Maybe ride my bike once in awhile, or walk to close by places. Being active has had a huge impact on my life. I like to be active and go to different places.

  14. My grandma on my dad’s side was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer. I really don’t know much about this type of cancer, but what I do know is that it’s a rare type and it’s mostly found on women. It’s difficult to detect gallbladder cancer at its early stages which makes it hard to treat because it’s not detected until it’s developed. Unfortunately for my grandma she past away 5 months later after she found out she had gallbladder cancer. On the other side of the family my grandpa has high cholesterol which is due to the fact that he had a bad eating habit! He worked at Burger King, so all he would eat is junk food. Now he has changed his eating habits which have decreased the level of his cholesterol. Seeing these health problems running in my family makes me realize that my habits aren’t very good and need to start changing. My life hasn’t been affected by fitness much since I workout daily, but my eating habits definitely affect my health. Which means I have to start eating more vegetables and less junk food in order to live a healthier lifestyle.

  15. My family has a small history of colon cancer. So it is very important for the women in my family to get colonoscopies and exams every few years.These steps are really important because doing so will increase the chances of catching it an early stage. There are many different ways to prevent colon cancer through diet, for example; some foods have cancer fighting compounds, some stimulate the immune system. Though this type of cancer is considered curable in its early stages, it can still be fatal and dangerous.

  16. In my family, heart disease and heart attacks are not uncommon. This is due to a combination of high cholesterol, unhealthy eating habits, and bad genetics. Some ways I personally manage my health is to have regular cholesterol level checks and plenty of cardiovascular exercises. Sometimes that includes bike rides or jogging or even just walking my dogs. Any exercise is better than none when it comes to keeping your health up. The main key is to eat right, stay active, and have regular checkups with your doctor. With any health risk this is the ideal plan but of course with more specific risks comes more specific prevention and treatment. I value my health and my future so I try my best to keep strong cardiovascular health.

  17. Health and wellness are important to me because I have been affected personally by illnesses within my family. About a year ago, my father was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease but had no idea that he had had it for so long. Because he was deprived of this information, the severity of the disease was greater. This affects me because I am more likely to get this disease. Another connection I have to illness is my sister. She discovered that she has a very rare blood disease called Factor II Mutation which dangerously affected her first pregnancy. With all of this knowledge, I realize that there are many things that I can do to prevent these things from happening to me. The first thing I can do is have my blood tested for any sign of platelet mutations and also see what things I can find out about Crohn’s. I can also maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

  18. There are a few different health issues that have affected me personally. The first: diabetes. My grandma (mom’s mom) and my uncle (dad’s brother) both got diabetes as they got older. I know one factor of getting diabetes is what you eat and I’m not completely sure if it “runs in the family” or not, but my mom said that if it did, it would skip a generation (her and her brothers and sisters) and come to us (my brothers, me, and my cousins). So really the only thing I can do to prevent myself from getting diabetes is being healthy. The second health issue: cancer. My aunt (dad’s sister) went through three different “rounds” of cancer. I believe it was two rounds of breast cancer and one round of thyroid cancer. I remember when she went through chemo and had to get her head shaved. I don’t believe this “runs in the family” either. The third health issue is heart problems. My grandma (mom’s mom) recently had to go to the hospital several times because she was having problems with her heart. It was a scary time and my mom had to go to Kentucky at one point (because that is where my grandma lives) to be with her at the hospital. Also relating to heart problems, my uncle and aunt (mom’s brother and sister) were both diagnosed with a “heart murmur.” Furthermore, my two brothers and I were all diagnosed with “slight heart murmur.” I'm not sure if it’s still present, as we had it at birth, but I do not think that it will ever affect us in any significant way. I suppose the best way to try to prevent health issues is just to be healthy, which includes eating healthy, staying active, and watching how we treat our bodies.

  19. My family has health issues with cancer, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. My dad has high blood pressure and cholesterol and has to watch what he eats. My mom’s grandmother died of stomach cancer and my dad’s father died of liver cancer. My other relatives have died from various cancers as well. Changing your habits could decrease chances of getting sick especially if they are bad habits such as eating out too much or not getting the right amount of exercise. Being more actively involved will increase your energy level. It helps to maintain a healthy weight and is good for the heart. I need to improve on eating healthier since high blood pressure and high cholesterol run in the family. I don’t want to worry about getting high cholesterol or high blood pressure at a young age like my dad.

As far I don’t know anyone whose health has been affected by negative lifestyle choices as in my surrounding or in my family everyone has good lifestyle except our genetic that has problem of diabetes. As per my family record, genetically there is risk of sugar/diabetes. I believe the changing habit on eating of high sugar containing food, high calories foods and the regular exercise may help in reducing the risk of future diabetes problem. If we are actively involved in all these kinds of habit it would definitely increase our energy level for us to continue further. For me the diabetes may be the biggest concern as it is in genetics of our family and for that reason I believe I should make some change in my eating habits and be more concentrated on exercise. But until now my life is not affected my any kind of health, diet or any other kind of problem and I hope it would not happen in future and for that I should be concerned in my habits.

  21. Diabetes runs in my family and my chances of getting it are very high. There are a lot of things that can be done to reduce the chance such as reducing sugar intake and staying active to make sure i don't become overweight. Lung cancer also runs in my family starting with my grandpa who has been smoking most of his life. My mom grew up with secondhand smoke so her chances of getting lung cancer are high. My father also smoked, but has thankfully quit which decreases his chances of getting lung cancer. We can all decrease chances of getting lung cancer by avoiding smoking and being around people who smoke. So far I have managed to stay healthy and doing these small things can help me stay healthy for hopefully the rest of my life.

  22. I think changing ones habits can definitely decrease a persons chance of getting sick. My family has a history of colon cancer which has caused me and to start thinking about ways our family can live a more healthy lifestyle.For example simple things in our diet that could be changed such as eating less red meat and adding more vegetables to our meals. Also my family is looking for more ways we can become active such as walking for 30 minutes or even doing simple exercises inside our house such as using the jump rope. Even though our family has a history of this diseases I think by changing our lifestyle to a more healthy one can reduce our chances of getting this disease significantly.

  23. Changing the way you live your life, and living with better eating and dieting habits will obviously decrease your chances of illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Not only that but it will also increase your metabolism and energy level. The more energy you have the more active you are. Then it will just get easier and easier the more you exercise. In my family, my dad and grandpa both have had skin cancer, but lucky neither was affected too badly. I think that another habit more Americans should start is putting on sun screen. I believe that skin cancer is being overlooked because of all the other health problems in America. I know i try to stay active and put sun screen on.

  24. Both sides of my family have heart problems. My mom's dad has a pacemaker and has gone through several heart surgeries. Both my mom's dad and dad's dad have had heart attacks, and my dad's mom has recently had heart surgery and needed to have a stint put it. I know I don't make very healthy decisions, but I know that I want to have a good life when I'm old. I'm motivated to make healthy decisions because I don't want to die of a heart attack, and I don't want heart problems. I know it runs in my family, and I want to be careful and make good decisions so I won't have heart complications in the future.

  25. Unfortunately, in the Levin Family, high cholesterol is a big problem. Both my parents and grandparents have high cholesterol and at the age of twelve I was told I did as well. Being an active kid, playing soccer and lacrosse several times a week, did not prevent me from being affected by bad genetics. My family has always eaten healthy and we always work out. My dad takes medication for his high cholesterol and his father had to have open heart surgery at a very young age because of related heart problems. Since my family is now well aware of the challenges we face having high cholesterol, we make a point to cut out unnecessary fats. We use products like margarine to make everything just a little bit healthier. I am now aware of the importance of taking care of my body and maintaining my health. I work out regularly and try to eat as healthy as possible. While I cannot change my genes, I can continue to watch what I eat as I continue with my lifelong struggle to control my high cholesterol.

  26. My grandfather has Parkinson's disease, which makes it really really hard to make smooth movements, and it's progressive, so you slowly lose control of your body. His hands shake a lot, and he often uses a walker and sometimes an electric wheelchair to move around. It's partially genetic, which scares me a little, especially because I don't exactly have steady hands.

    I also have skin cancer in my family history, on both sides. My other grandfather recently had part of the tip of his nose removed to get rid of some cancer cells. It doesn't look much different, but it's not the first time he's had cancerous cells removed. Obviously one of the ways to prevent it is to wear sunscreen, which people didn't know about when our grandparents were growing up. We should learn from what they didn't know, and make sure that when we're outside for long periods of time that we're wearing sunscreen.

  27. Many of your lifestyle choices affect you in ways you may not even know. The way you consume food on a daily basis and the choices of whether to work out or lay on the couch take a toll on your body later in life if it doesn't already affect you. As teenagers our metabolism's work at a much faster rate and if we consume junk food regularly and we don't notice anything now, but it will most definitely catch up with us when we are adults. Not properly exercising and regulating our food and diet can lead to heart disease, cholesterol problems, diabetes and obesity. It is important to take care of your body today in order for it to be healthy and fit later. I've always eaten healthy and had well balanced meals but I didn't have the most perfect diet. I ate sweets and soda but a year and a half ago I decided that they weren't essential and I wanted to eat more healthy and increase the exercise in my routine. Now I don't drink soda and I eat sweets in moderation. Everything in moderation can be a good thing and regulating your exercise and diet is also necessary.

  28. In my family, multiple sclerosis is a prevalent health issue. Multiple sclerosis (commonly known as MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects your central nervous system. Both my mom and my grandmother have forms of MS, which puts me at a greater risk to be diagnosed with a type of MS. My mom has Sjögren’s syndrome, which is a form of MS in which your white blood cells attack glands that produce moisture in your body. People with Sjögren’s syndrome have extremely dry eyes and mouth, and they must consistently drink water throughout the day. Because it stems from MS, Sjögren’s also causes people to experience extreme fatigue and joint pain. Although there is no specific way to prevent me from developing MS and/or Sjögren’s, I can live a lifestyle that is healthy and strong. If I start an early habit of staying fit, it will be easier for me to combat an autoimmune disease I could develop in the future.

  29. In my family tree, the amount of health issues that plague it are overwhelming. Heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, heart attacks, and strokes are a few of the diseases that have been passed down within the past three generations. With my dad and grandparents having to deal with high cholesterol, I am immediately affected by certain dieting habits such using healthier ingredients in any food that is cooked and eaten at home. Exercising and being more active in outdoor activities such as jogging is one thing I can do and improve on to keep myself in good shape with a healthier mindset.

  30. Both sides of my family have a history of illnesses. On my Dad's side, heart diseases run through the family, and on my mom's side, diabetes runs through her family. Although my Dad does not suffer from any heart disease, he is highly prone to. While my mom suffers from diabetes. This has caused her to change her life dramatically because she has to take insulin before meals. Looking at my family history, I am more prone for diabetes than for heart diseases. To keep myself from diabetes, I have to keep my sugar intake in check. Also for heart diseases, I have to exercise frequently to prevent it. Also heart diseases for some reason show up frequently for people who have origins in South Asia. It might be the climate or just an ethnic trait. Although I was born in America, I'm still prone to heart diseases because of my ethnicity.

  31. Hi my name is Greg Mohr, and my life has been affected greatly by illness. When I was 15 years old I was diagnosed with type-one diabetes. Type one diabetes is the type of diabetes that results from autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Because of my diagnosis I had to alter many aspects of my life. Some of the things I had to change in my life are my eating habits and the way I work out. When I work out I have to check my blood sugar to make sure it is high enough to account for the drop I will receive six ours later. I also had to change my eating habits to healthier foods so that later in life I will not have heart disease and other health problems that come later on with diabetes. The way I keep my blood sugars normal is by exercise through hockey and an insulin pump I wear 24/7. Keeping my blood sugars at a normal rate was really hard at first, but now I have learned in the past two years how to keep them regulated.

  32. There are some health issues in my immediate family. My mom has high blood pressure, which is due to bad genes because she is not overweight. My dad, on the other hand, has high cholesterol and dipped snuff for about twenty years. His high cholesterol comes from his poor diet, although he is trying to change his eating habits. Eating a lot of junk food contributed to his high cholesterol, so he tries to eat fruits and vegetables instead. Dipping snuff can lead to various types of oral cancer, and thankfully, my dad has remained healthy. Other people aren’t so lucky, so it is important to remember to keep away from cancer-causing substances or activities. Health problems also occur in my extended family. A few years ago, my grandfather was told by his doctor that he needed to lose at least 50 pounds. It was encouraging to see him transform his life by exercising and eating healthy. He lost the weight and lowered his risk for heart disease. He showed me that it is possible to change your lifestyle choices. My aunt passed away from breast cancer in the late 90’s, and my great-grandmother had breast cancer as well. Both were diagnosed in their 30’s. There is a chance that I could get breast cancer, so I want to be proactive by going to the doctor and getting regular checkups to make sure that I am healthy. I want to focus on being as healthy as I can. What I need to work on most is eating right. There is a lack of vegetables in my diet, so I want to improve my eating habits.

    My life has been affected directly and indirectly by health issues and healthy habits. My family, for one, has been prone to addictions. There are my mother’s cousins and uncles that have drug and alcohol addictions. Thyroid problems have arisen as well; my mother, grandmother and aunt all have to take medicine for their thyroids. Healthy habits are a routine for me, though. I work out regularly about 3 hours a day for volleyball. The hours vary depending on our schedule, but 3 hours is my average. I also keep to a healthy eating diet that helps me have staying energy during my practices. All these things are present in my life so I know that if I maintain my healthy diet and regularly exercise then I can keep our family’s problems away from me and my life.

  34. Unfortunately the gene pool from my mother’s side of the family that gave me long legs also threatens to pass on the gene for alcoholism. My favorite aunt, my mother’s sister, is a recovering alcoholic now going on 23 years sober. I am very proud of her for making such a drastic turn around and maintaining this choice for so long; however, the presence of this gene in my genetic makeup is an unfortunate reality. As a part of the genetic influence, alcohol has a much stronger likelihood to become addictive for me, making it even more important for me to avoid alcohol as a minor. Although it is a gene that is inherited, I still have the ability to control whether the gene affects me or not. By making the decision to not consume alcohol I can guarantee that this genetic trait will not affect me. This lifestyle choice is one I have not had trouble maintaining thus far, but I know that as I embark on college next year I will have to work harder to fight peer pressure against drinking. Although this position may be difficult to maintain I am determined to not compromise my stance so as to protect my health.

  35. The most important things in your life right now is to change the way you eat and to not smoke. My family has a history of cancer and diabetes. On my Mom's side of the family my Grandfather did of cancer because he smoked. Also my Grandma on my Mom's side of the family has borderline diabetes. Then on my Dad's side of the family my Grandfather has diabetes. The best way to prevent these diseases from happening is to not smoke and stay away from sugar products or goods. Its better to drink more water than just sodas and its also better to eat more protein than to just eat sugar products and get fat. Being healthy is a major part of my life.

  36. My dad has High Cholesterol and it is heredity but can be prevented in many ways. Ways to prevent cholesterol is to eat foods that are good for you, exercise, and mental stress. Also as you get older the easier it is to get high cholesterol the prime age is fifty-five years and older. There are many ways to control your cholesterol the one my dad primary uses is medication to balance his cholesterol levels. So yes, changing habits can decrease ones chances of getting high cholesterol.

I have become aware that there have been several cases of prostate cancer on my father's side of the family and even several deaths attributed to the disease, including my grandfather and my great grandfather. I have recently became aware that prostate cancer does, indeed, run in families. What is a particular concern is that prostate cancer doesn't have symptoms to go along with it until it is far in advance. There has been some evidence that certain dietary changes could affect one's chances of getting said disease. These include eating several cooked tomatoes and certain vegetables called cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. By eating these foods, hopefully I will be able to fend off this disease. Just changing my diet a couple of times a week could actually save my life. While diet is very important, it is also imperative that I do not slack on the other habits in my life such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle and that I keep a level of fitness that will keep me healthy even after my days of playing sports are said and done.

  38. In the Baker family, diabetes and obesity are very prevalent. Both my grandfathers suffered from Type 2 diabetes. One grandfather was severely wounded and damaged during his military service in Vietnam, along with high blood pressure and old age, his diabetes progressed so seriously that it forced him to have to amputate one of his legs. My other grandfather survived many illnesses, including polio and tuberculosis, and combined with cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure his diabetes worsened, as he grew older. In order to prevent getting diabetes, I should eat healthy and lower my sugar content while staying active. Also, I should change my eating habits and become more physically fit because obesity runs in my family. My father was severely obese along with two of my aunts. I should also keep a low-fat diet because all of the women in my family have had to get their gallbladder removed in their adult life. By eating healthy and staying in shape, I could seriously reduce or maybe prevent my chances of getting diabetes, obesity or gallbladder disease.

  39. My father, being one of the best cooks in the family, has throughout his life baked a variety of sweets and meals that our family loved to enjoy. However unfortunately, that led to him becoming diabetic in the past years. He didn't get a serious case of it, thankfully! However diabetes has caused him to be more cautious about what he eats, and it also has made my entire family become aware of the amount of sugar in different foods. We created many changes to our diet in order to not only help my dad but ourselves as well. I think everyone needs to become more aware of what they eat because if they don't their eating habits could lead to diabetes, obesity, heart problems, etc. It may not effect people our age now, but in the future it definitely will effect a whole bunch of people. This generation especially has become addicted to laziness and fast food, and if they keep this up then there could be serious problems for the future. The best way to help this is for people to become LESS LAZY and more active. Moderation in fast food and sweets is also a key factor too.

  40. My grandfather on my Mom's side unfortunately has high blood pressure. While there are many causes of high blood pressure, a lot of it happens to be genetic. My aunt also has high blood pressure, so it has become very important for my family to watch what we eat and to try to stay as healthy as possible. Knowing that high blood pressure is pretty common in our gene pool, it has forced us to make some simple changes. For example we definitely cut down on salt. Typically cutting back on salt prevents blood pressure from increasing. Also we all try our best to make pretty healthy choices in our food and eat junk food and sweets in moderation. These simple changes have kept all of us from having high blood pressure so far! Although high blood pressure is typically more common in older people, it is safe to say that the choices that my siblings and I make now, will reduce our chances of getting higher blood pressure in the future. Regardless of a person's genes, it is still highly important for everyone to exercise and eat well in order to stay healthy!

  41. In my family, diabetes and high blood pressure run in large amounts. The people in my family that have diabetes are my aunt, 3 of my uncles my dad, and my grandmother. For high blood pressure, 2 of my uncles, my dad and my grandmother have it. These statistics put me at a very high risk for both diabetes and high blood pressure, and that is very terrifying to me. When I go down to Arizona see the amount of pills and different types of medications they take, it always makes my jaw drop. When I see this kind of stuff it makes me work harder to prevent it for myself. To prevent this i work out a lot, watch what I eat, and always stay active. What helps me stay active is my athletic training for the school. This keeps me busy for at least 10-14 hours a week, working all types of practices. I know the odds are against me for high blood pressure and diabetes, but i'm determined to defy the odds.

  42. I sit in the kitchen every night and watch as my grandfather pricks his finger, blood runs out and he tests it on a strip, he has Type II Diabetes. The fact that i could inherit this disease scares me a little bit. As i grow up, i don't want to have to watch what i eat, how much of something i eat, and constantly check for the sugar content every time i eat. Type II is the most common, diabetes is a lifelong (chronic) disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. When you have Type II. your fat, liver, and muscle cells do not respond correctly to insulin, otherwise known as insulin resistance. This disease occurs slowly overtime, and that is what i am afraid of? If i don't have it now, when am i going to get it?

  43. There are several diseases that run through my family's medical history. My grandparents on my mother's side suffer from high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer(brain and prostate), glaucoma, dementia, Parkinson's, strokes, and cardiovascular problems.
    My family originated from Vietnam, so coming over to America, eating habits changed for the worse. They ate bad foods and too much of unhealthy portions. This increased their chances of being diagnosed of illnesses, and increases the chances of their decedents' chances of receiving the same issues.
    My mom is very worried about her health and started to exercise regularly. She walks every morning and every night, every day for the past year and a half. I would join her sometimes in the evening if I have the time after school and homework. We do this to keep our bodies healthy, lower our chance of diseases, and live happier lives.

In my family, we are fortunate to not have any genetic diseases circulating our family tree, and even more so, I am very fortunate to live a healthy life with no personal experience with a serious illness. However, illnesses of others have affected my life. My dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer a few years ago. Luckily, the cancer did not spread and has now fully recovered from this cancer and he hopefully remains in good health. His illness was unfortunately a result of sheer bad luck. Also, my best friend’s sister has dealt with heart problems since her birth as a result of a heart defect originating from a problem in a valve. She has recently replaced her valve with a new one and will have to replace her new one again once she outgrows it. My grandfather, who lives a healthy life and runs around 10 miles every other day has recently discovered that he has high cholesterol and has to cut back on his intake in unhealthy foods to readjust his diet. This shows that while exercise is important to your health, diet goes hand in hand with your health. You must have a balance.

    My experience with illnesses is a mixture of unhealthy eating habits and mainly bad luck. Yet, I have realized and am very aware that exercise and healthy food consumption is key to living a healthy and happy life. I try to cut back on my intake of fast food, my family buys as much organic food as we can, I dance around 21 hours a week, and my mom is extremely conscious of skin cancer because of our family’s fair skin, so she is a very big promoter of sun screen. Focusing on improving health habits will lead to a happier, healthier, and most importantly, a LONGER life. By choosing to make unhealthy habits in your daily life, you are choosing to shorten your life.

  45. As of today no one in my entire family has any kind of diabetes, but many family members do make bad lifestyle decisions. Changing your habits can definitely help you avoid getting diabetes and other diseases. It is actually quite easy to change your lifestyle, for example.. Take the stairs at the mall instead of the escelator, walk to work, ride your bike to school, take your dog out for a walk, doing yardwork, lifting weights, and taking a jog. Making these lifestyle changes will definitely give you more energy during the day, you'll have noticeable more energy and even be in a better mood. As for me, i stay very active with wrestling and cycling all the time so my main problem is diet. Yeah i have a good diet in wrestling season, but outside of that i tend to eat lots of sweets and not enough vegetables and fruits. Another important thing is to make sure you drink enough water. If you don't drink enough water your immune system starts failing thus enabling you to get sick easier.

  46. I believe that changing your habits can lead to the prevention of serious diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. By making a change in your life you can potentially save it. There are many ways to change your habit, exercise more, eat right, and don't be lazy. Little things can also make a big difference; take the stairs rather than the elevator, walk to more places instead of driving, and choose fruit over fattening food like french fries. Personally, my aunts, uncles, and grandparents struggle from high blood pressure and diabetes due to stress and eating habits. This has influenced my family to watch what we consume and what we choose. The big way my family and I prevent this, is by staying active with sports and exercise. Keep up a healthy lifestyle, so that one of these disease does not catch you.

  47. Sadly many people in my family have some type of health issue. My grandma recently passed away due to Parkinson’s disease, and her husband currently suffers from diabetes, skin cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Also, my great grandpa also passed away from dementia. It’s sad to have seen them, and still see my grandpa, suffer from these unfriendly diseases. In my grandma and grandpa’s cases i believe they both could have increased their health immensely if they had chosen a healthier lifestyle before they were too sick. They both smoked as adults, and were never too interested in staying active. These are definitely factors that could have helped them stay healthier longer. In most cases, changing lazy habits or bad habits like smoking can most definitely decrease chances of being sick. Also being more actively involved increases your energy levels. You won’t feel that exhausted, bloated, couch potato feeling all the time if you are more active. I for one never want to be in a situation where my health is a factor of me being able to live my life. With that being said, I plan to live a healthy lifestyle by participating in activities such as cycling and maintaining a healthy diet.

  48. Many diseases run in my family. My Grandma had melanoma and still has to get a lot of skin cancer spots off, and my mom has gotten spots removed also. My Grandpa died from lung cancer and many of his brothers and sisters had cancer as well.

    Changing your habits can majorly decrease your chances of getting sick whether it is eating healthier, working out or not tanning it will make a huge difference in your life and will help you be less likely to get diseases like obesity or diabetes. By exercising and being active regularly your body gets used to moving and you have more energy than if you just sit on the couch all day

    As someone that knows skin cancer runs in the family I know that bad habits can increase my chances of getting sick. As much as I would like to look tan, I know there is a much higher risk of me getting skin cancer if I go to a tanning bed or do not put on sun screen.

  49. In my family tree diseases such as diabetes are prevalent on both sides, as well as heart disease. I have had one grandfather pass away from Lung Cancer, and the other grandfather has been told every year for the past 15 years that he will die within the year due to liver failure caused by cirrhosis of the liver, I guess you can say he is holding on for his life. Both his cirrhosis and the other grandfather’s lung cancer were both caused by poor choices in the lifestyles they live or lived. My grandmother who watched my grandfather die from smoking still continues to smoke, I suppose it would take her own diagnosis to make her quit. As for my mother she deals with her own mental illness and my father battles the same problem as his father. So I suppose I’m at risk for many things, whether it is smoking and developing a disease related to one of the thousands of chemicals in tobacco smoke, getting addicted to substances that cause problems down the road, or discovering a chemical imbalance in my brain. So far though I am pretty healthy, I stay away from addictive substances because I don’t want to travel down the road many of my family members have.

  50. On my dads side of the family, my grandfather has diabetes, and my dad has high choloestral. My grandfather has to check his blood everyday, and my father always has to make sure that what he's eating won't raise his choloestral, and now he eats a lot healthier than he did before. Since I don't want have diabetes or high cholestral, I am somewhat careful with my diet. I don't really eat vegetables, but I will eat fruits the whole day if I had the choice. My family (mom and 2 brothers) aren't really careful with what they eat either. My brother loves fries, and could eat them everyday if my mom let him, and him eating french fries all the time will hurt him in the future. I am not an active person, I'm pretty lazy, but I know that if I take out atleast 45 minutes of my day to just ride a bike, go for a walk, etc. it'll help me become a lot more healthier.

  51. Our society today in America has become excessively overweight and obese. While this can be due to the cause of family genes and genetics, it is mainly due to the fact that people are just lazy these days. Being overweight and obese can lead to serious health problems and can even put people at a high risk of dying. Eating unhealthy foods such as fast foods, sodas, candies, and other high calorie, high cholesterol items not only makes a person gain weight but they can damage their health system as well. Staying fit and active is one of the most important things a person can do to keep their body healthy. Changing a person’s diet from unhealthy foods to healthy foods would change their world. While the healthy foods not may be as good nor as appealing as the unhealthy foods, at the end of the day the person will feel great about themselves and their bodies will feel great too. Eating healthy foods decreases the chances of a person from becoming ill so often and also gives a person natural energy and protein throughout the day, whereas certain energy drinks, such as Red Bull or Monster, which are mainly fill with straight sugar causes a person to crash after a certain amount of time, where as the protein in fruits and vegetables do not. Being an athlete, l always have to watch what I’m eating and when I’m eating it. Eating a large pizza would not be good before going out to a soccer practice in the hot heat. Certain foods and drinks can cause dehydration in a person so I have to be cautious of those things. Soccer has kept me in great shape and is always keeping me active. Because of playing soccer all the time and watching what l eat, I can honestly say for myself that l am rarely out missing school because of sicknesses. Eating the right foods and staying active does not only benefit certain people but it benefits everyone. Being healthy and aware of what you’re putting into your mouth will not only help out on the short run, but it will create a longer and more fulfilling life.

  52. My family has a super high risk of cancer up to the point where its matter of when I will get it not if. We all have to stay out of the sun and watch ourselves but sometimes we ignore this. I have had a bad habit of staying the sun for long periods of time with out sunblock ever since I was young; I have been increasing my risk for quite a bit. Some more caution would do my family and I some good.

  53. My dad has diabetes due to negative choices in diet and habits. My mom also had diabetes while she was pregnant and had to change her diet completely, but after my sister was born she did not have it anymore. My grandma has thyroid problems and my aunt and dad have knee issues. My great parents have died of Alzheimer's.

    In most cases, like some types of cancer, you can change your habits to decrease your chances of getting cancer and increase your chances of surviving cancer if you have it.

    When it comes to energy, plenty of rest, a good diet, and exercise always helps.

    For me, diet, exercise, etc.. are important. They help you to be healthy and live longer.

  54. My friend was diagnosed a couple years ago with diabetes and he was only 14 when it happened. I have watched him struggle as a teenager with this issue and I've learned a lot about my health from watching him. He didn't get diabetes from doing anything wrong in his childhood, but by a stroke of bad luck, he was diagnosed with the illness. He has to continually check his blood sugar and watch what he eats. Eating with him keeps me more accountable to what I eat because he isn't allowed to eat tons of junk food anymore, but he has to make sure he eats what's appropriate to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. It would be easy for me to just go out and eat whatever I want, but because such a close friend was affected by diabetes, I have been choosing fruits and vegetables over bad food. I don't particularly enjoy exercising, but if it keeps me healthy, it's worth it to spend half an hour on a bike or even on a walk.

  55. All four of my grandparents have Type 1 diabetes which puts my brother and I at an extremely high risk for diabetes. This is a genetic problem that we need to focus on having healthy lifestyle choices in order to decrease our risk of developing diabetes. My paternal grandfather died from cancer of the jaw because he used to dip everyday; this cancer was completely preventable but his negative lifestyle choices ended up killing him. My entire family focuses on eating healthy because we have really bad genetics. It would be nice to be able to eat whatever I want when I want but because I am trying to prevent myself from getting diabetes and that is more important then that delicious plate of french fries.

  56. My family has a history of skin disease specifically melanoma. My grandpas brother had a very serous spot on his face and had to have half of his nose removed because of the melanoma spot. My dad has had some spots on his back that have been removed and me i had one spot that luckily was removed early and did not do any harm to me. Staying out the sun and never going going to the tanning beds is the most help that i can do to protect my skin. My whole family except me also struggles with high cholesterol. This is most likely coming from eating very poorly and not exercising properly. Things that have affected me personally is not eating properly and having the daily exercise that i should be doing.

However, on both sides of my family there is a history of high blood pressure and cholesterol. This predisposition for these life altering conditions, has brought an awareness to the forefront of my mind. In recent years, and especially since I have turned 18, I have become increasingly aware of the diseases I could potentially incur. This high awareness has led me to become cautious of what I eat, and how often I exercise. These changes, are beneficial not only to prevent high blood pressure and cholesterol but to also ensure a well-rounded healthy lifestyle.

  58. Throughout the past years, I have neglected sunscreen. My skin never burns, and if it does, the sunburn is gone within a day. I've always liked the fact that I've been able to tan so naturally, but now, as I'm getting older, I'm realizing how bad my decision to not wear sunscreen is. There is a type of skin cancer called melonoma, and it is very common among young adults. After research, I learned that it only takes one bad sunburn to cause moles that can become cancerous. It is important to always wear sunscreen, so I will never have to worry about getting moles that will damage my health in the future. Next summer, I will be better prepared and will often lather SPF 100 sunscreen on my body to protect my skin from sunburn.

Most likely, this problem is caused by bad eating habits or not enough physical activity. Also, it is a result of bad genes. Unfortunately, this genetic trait makes me susceptible to high blood pressure and cholesterol as well. In general, my whole family needs to improve our eating and exercise habits. In order to prevent future problems, I need to maintain an active lifestyle and remember to eat healthy foods.

  60. My family has had several cases of cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Just 5 years ago my grandmother passed away due to Alzheimer’s and it hit my family very hard. My Great Grandpa died of lung cancer and my Uncle has heart issues. It is imperative that I stay at the peak of my health in order to reduce my chances of contracting any of these genetic diseases. A healthy body will always stand a better chance against diseases like this, so there are several things in my life that I could change to improve my chances. I am an athlete who has some sort of athletic activity every day of the week. Although my diet is not horrible, there are definitely areas where I need to improve if I expect to stay healthy for the rest of my life. I need to start replacing some of the sugary treats I have on occasion (donuts, fast food, candy, chocolate) with healthier options (granola, pasta, fruit). There are also many times where I should walk or run somewhere as opposed to making the short drive. Even though I do some sort of workout every day, it would be for nothing if all I do the rest of the day is sit around watching television. I want to be as healthy as I can for as long as I can, and if I do simple things such as slightly changing my diet and lifestyle choices I will ensure better defenses and health for myself and my future.

  61. My dad's side of the family has had type two diabetes, which put's me at a high risk of getting type two diabetes in the future. Growing up, I have seen many symptoms of diabetic patients. This has lead me to consuming less sugar, because there is a very high possibility that I will be diagnosed with type two diabetes in the future if I don't control my glucose consumption. Although this may be uncomfortable at times because I cannot eat sweets as much as others, this will lead to a healthier diet.

  62. My family has a history of colon cancer and my uncle suffered from it. Unfortunately, he passed away due to his lack of commitment to his treatment. He refused to get everything looked at and it came to a point where it was too late to. In addition, my grandfather passed away from lung cancer. His actions were a great impact to his death. He smoked for about 26 years and although he quit, everything caught up to him and resulted in lung cancer. He was treated for years to try get healthy, but there came a point where the doctors couldn't do anymore. He passed away too. The sad thing about this situation is that it could have easily been prevented. If my grandpa hadn't begun smoking in his teen years, he would have never suffered from lung cancer and could still be here with us today. I have learned from this experience and it has made a huge impact on me to prevent me from smoking myself.

  63. Heart attacks have occurred quite frequently in my family. My grandfather has had multiple heart attacks and has made it through all of them. After his last heart attack they put a pace maker inside of him. This just regulates his heartbeat and keeps it on the right track. I’m so glad he has made it through the heart attacks. 4 different people have had heart attacks in my family. Some have had more than one, and some have only had one. By eating low fat and low cholesterol food and maintaining a healthy diet, I think this could reduce the possibilities of heart attacks in my family.

  64. In my family's history, we have had encounters with different forms of cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Fortunately for me I have done as much as I can to prevent life illnesses. I would say that my relatives probably get sick because of lack of exercise and not eating right. Its affected me because my family also struggles with obesity due to years of not eating right, and now its hard for them to lose weight as fast as they would like, but i learned from it and kept eating right when they wouldn't and now try to help them watch what they eat to keep a balanced but healthy diet.

  65. My grandfather got Type 2 diabetes when he was 52 years old. We have watched him adjust to having to test his blood, not eat certain foods if his blood sugar is too high, and having to eat certain foods if his blood sugar is too low. We have watched him struggle to adjust to having diabetes, and in effect, my entire family worries about the possibility of getting Type 2 diabetes as well. Because of the fear of getting Type 2 diabetes, my family tries to be extremely conscious about what we eat. We try to eat less sugar (in deserts and snacks) and more healthy foods (fruits and vegetables). We avoid foods with high cholesterol counts to avoid high cholesterol and high blood pressure, which typically follows. We also try to stay active to avoid becoming overweight, because being overweight makes you more susceptible to getting Type 2 diabetes. Six days a week I do gymnastics and on Sundays my whole family goes on a bike ride or a run together so that we can be doing something active everyday. We try to do anything we can to help my grandfather with his diabetes, but we also do everything we can to prevent ourselves from getting it as well.

  66. My family history lacks many genetic issues however my grandpa, on my father's side, had colon cancer. This cancer is made more likely by being over the age of 60, of African-American or Eastern European decent, having a diet of eating red meat frequently, and by having a history of the disease. Being aware of all of these ways in which it's more likely, I work on the things that I can change such as my diet. With this change I can keep myself healthy and well for my future ahead.

  67. My family has been lucky to not have many genetic issues. I believe it is because of the habits that we all have become accustomed to. Eating right provides your body with the nutrients that are necessary to be healthy. Incorporating a good diet with exercise can be very beneficial. It can prevent you from having heart problems and developing diseases that deal with obesity. I believe that it is important to stay healthy and eating right and working out is my way of doing it.

  68. Luckily, I have no bad health history in my family. The only gene that has been passed down to me health wise is a high metabolism. Having a high metabolism makes it very difficult for me to gain weight. Although this gene is very beneficial most of the time, there are some cons to it as well. Because I stay thin so easily, I have very little motivation to go work out. Because I don’t work out a lot, I don’t have as much energy as I could have. Besides that, I am very healthy. I think in order to stay healthy we need to have good eating habits and stay very active. I also think good amounts of sleep each night is good for us.

  69. Both of my grandpas have type two diabetes. Ever since I have been able to remember, I have notices
    that they struggle with their health and the foods they can eat. Both my grandpas are always having to check their blood sugar or having to go to the doctor to make sure everything is okay. Their health conditions give me a scare sometimes, but it helps me make better decisions when it comes to picking something to eat. I know that it runs in my family so I have to be careful of my eating decisions. My great grandfather dies of lung cancer at a very young age. Because he was a smoker for 22 years his lungs developed the cancer. His fatality made me realize what smoking cigarettes can do to your body and how it can effect your health. All of these health issues in my family have helped me realize that the decisions that you make when you are young can affect your health the rest of your life.

  70. My family history is full of many medical issues. The most serious issues that are present in my family are heart disease, diabetes, and celiacs disease. One of my grandfathers was diagnosed about five years ago with diabetes and now has to watch his diet much more carefully. My other grandfather has been struggling with numerous heart attacks and disorders over the years as he ages. Just recently, my sister was diagnosed with celiacs disease, which means she is gluten-intolerant and she now has to avoid eating any products with gluten or she gets very sick. My parents belive that the diabetes and heart issues may be genetic, and are for sure that the celieacs disease was a genetic disorder.

    Luckily i only suffer from a minor medical issue, asthma. My grandfather also had asthma so it is believed to be genetically passed onto me. Because of my condition i have to take breathing treatments (when needed) and i have to bring an inhaler when i go to soccer or play sports in case i have an asthma attack. Keeping healthy with exercise and a decent diet has helped me pretty much overcome my asthma and keep my body in shape. One thing i definitely need to improve is my diet. Eating unhealthy foods can become a habit and it's a very bad habit to get into. With a good and healthy diet, i would have much more energy and be in great shape for the future.

Although there are no genetic issues, we still take care of our health by exercising, eating healthy and making healthy decisions. Changing bad, unhealthy habits to healthy ones could make one happier, healthier and have more energy. Many studies have shown that exercising has actually increased energy levels. There is a major misconception that people have about exercise and energy... I think for my entire life, I've been living healthy, but not necessarily watching my weight.

It is important for me to eat a low sugar diet to prevent getting diabetes. To reduce the chance of me developing cancer, I eat fish twice a week, limit my time spent in the sun and exercise every day. My other grandfather and my two of my aunts have high blood pressure. High blood pressure can be easily monitored by getting it checked regularly. Maintaining a healthy weight and limiting the amount of sodium I consume both reduce my risk of getting high blood pressure. To maintain my overall health it is essential that I eat five servings of fruits and vegetables drink plenty of water and getting enough sleep. Some easy substitutions that can greatly improve health include getting grilled instead of fried foods at restaurants, walking instead of driving and reducing the amount of sugar and fat consumptions.

  73. My family has been negatively affected by genetics. On my mom's side of the family both her mom and dad have glaucoma and now my mom has picked up on it. We also have a very common problem of high blood pressure that runs in my family which puts me at high risk also. I personally believe that people can decrease their chances of getting sick by following a healthier lifestyle. Eating healthy, exercising, and making the right decisions could all impact our lives greatly.

    I also believe that being more active gives you much more energy. I've actually noticed over the years that when I used to workout I would have more energy. Now I've come to realize that I find myself tired often and it actually may be caused by my lack of exercise.

  74. My family’s health history doesn’t have too many problems except for a few strokes on my dad’s side. My family has turned around bad habits of not eating right and not being active. We now tend to eat fairly healthy. We hardly ever go eat out to fast food places and we buy all of our food from the Coppell Farmers Market or Sprouts. We stay fit by doing a lot of activities out doors when we can or just going to the gym. I don’t know if I will be affected by a stroke later in life but I am hoping I can prevent it by eating right and staying active through out my life.

  75. I have Hypertension or high blood pressure. Hypertension runs on my dad’s side of the family and I unfortunately got it. It is something that affects me daily. I have to take medication to keep it in the normal range. There are two things I can do differently this year to help my blood pressure. First is to avoid foods high in sodium because too much sodium raises blood pressure. Secondly I need to increase the amount of cardio I do. Cardiovascular exercises help decrease blood pressure and increase blood flow throughout the body. By doing making those two chances, I could potentially not have to take medication.

  76. My family doesn't really have a history of severe illnesses, but my grandparents have suffered from heart disease and has passed away. My one grandmother that i know is diagnosed with diabetes and is watching what they eat everyday.I know alot of people around me that was affected by bad habits, many adults around me has been smoking cigarettes for a long time. They are regretting alot right now to have started smoking and is affecting their lifestyle right now. Some suffer from difficult breathing and some are developing cornice diseases that needs surgery.

    I believe your habits greatly affect they health, in that whatever you eat and what you do effect your health balance and your functions. Even though being active gives you exercise and movement, only being active doesn't promote good health. You should eat right, exercise, and sleep right to recover your body. Your body and lifestyle is heavily affected by what you eat, and feel. Your diet affects your energy level during the day but if you're sick, then you can't be active during the day. Your fitness level also affects how much you can maintain your health and creates good internal body functions.

  77. My family has had bad luck in diabetes and high cholestrol. My grandmother has diabetes and takes medication daily and my father battles with high cholestrol, so he must watch what he eats and take medication. My dad tends to stay away from foods with high amounts of salt. While genetics is the main concern, my dad also does not make an effort to excercise daily and stay energized. I think that lifestyle choices determine your health because it is vital to stay active. I need to start making better choices on what I eat because I tend to go towards foods that are a quick trip rather than ones that are good for me. I think my poor eating habits will cause me to gain weight and contract high cholestrol in the future. I also need to make an effort to stay active. I play basketball during the Summer, but in offseason I do not make an effort to be healthy. I think that if I change my habits now, it can affect my life dramatically.

  78. My family has a history of heart problems, mainly defective heart valves which result in having to get open heart surgery. Thankfully I do not have any heart problems, but unfortunatly my dad has had to have two operations on his heart and was recently hospitalized for another. I am very interested in learning more about these heart problems so that I can prevent them from happening to my future family.
    Eating habits play a huge role in a person's daily life. For me I have to eat a lot of carbs because I practice soccer every day, sometimes twice a day, and I need the energy. The problem with that is that I have to watch how many I eat when I am not playing soccer. I have involuntarily gotten myself into bad eating habits because of the sport I play, but as long I as I work out my health will be fine! I believe obesity is a big problem in the USA and needs to be fixed!

  79. My family has had a fairly normal history with diseases and health risks. My father's side of the family, the Greek side, is almost spotless with health concerns that are life threatening. Almost all of my relatives on this side have lived long into their 80's with perfect health. However, something that does bother me is that this side of the family does include a history of Alzheimer's and Dementia. Currently my Grandfather is living in a nearby nursing home with dementia, and often forgets who I am.

    My mother's Irish side of the family is different. They all have perfect mental sharpness in their age, but have been susceptible to heart disease and high blood pressure. While none of my family from the Greek side has died of cancer, several of my Irish relatives have, such as my Grandmother and Grandfather.

    Our family is the first generation to mix the Irish and Greek blood, and the running joke is one child will get all the Greek health problems, and the other will get all the Irish ones. Strangely, this has some merit. I look exactly like my Dad, while my brother looks like my mom. If you put the two of us together, you probably would not guess we were brothers based off looks. Furthermore, I have nearly perfect health besides allergies which I have for the most part overcome through treatments, while my brother is more often sick and has more trouble with his allergies. Therefore, I secretly worry that I will develop Alzheimer's, and my brother will have cancer.

  80. My family has had a bad history with enlarged heart disease. My father recently had to have surgery on his heart and it was quite invasive. In my case bad genetics are working against me. I have to make sure my heart has no problems every five years and there is not much I can do about it. I can’t really prevent what happens to my heart with my genetics but I try to stay healthy and exercise to prevent form anything else from happening.

  81. My family has a history of diabetes and high cholesterol. My grandma has diabetes and my dad is very close to getting there. Due to genetics, I am very vulnerable to getting it as well. My family is very addicted to high sodium foods and sugar as well. My grandma takes medicine while my dad's diet is controlled by my mom. Due to genetics, I am watching my diet. Though I am a huge sweet tooth, I make sure to cut down on sugar. I gained a huge amount of weight and a larger possibility to have diabetes these past couple years. Due to fear of getting it, I will maintain not only a healthy diet but exercise regularly as well. That will be my initial step to a long process of becoming healthy.

  82. My grandma has high blood pressure, and stomach lining cancer, and some undiagnosed heart issues. Along with my other grandma who had breast cancer, and my Papa who had pancreatic cancer. When I was in kindergarten my papa died, four years after his diagnosis. I have heard people say poor diet, especially a high fat diet, and lack of exercise can cause cancer, but my Papa was a man that ate healthy, exercised regularly, yet still got cancer. Part of it may have to do with the fact that he lived a stressful life with his job and with my Aunt Susie who was ill as a child. She died of AT (ataxia-telangiectasia, a rare, genetic disease that attacks children) at the age of twelve. Other reasons could be that he was possibly exposed to something cancer causing or was genetically predisposed to such a form of cancer. That’s one thing about his passing that has bothered me, that we will never know how he got cancer in the first place. From watching my grandparents go through cancer I have seen how it takes its toll on the body. According to research that I have read, those that eat right and exercise have a lower incidence of cancer. I think that when you are young you should consistently be focusing on what you eat and getting significant exercise. We should try to stay energized and strive to live a healthy life, but its one thing to say and it’s another to do. As a community we should cut out a lot of fast food places or just fast food in general, make it easier to travel to places in the city without always having to use a car to try to get somewhere. Living in Texas makes it hard in many ways. The hot summers make it more difficult to exercise for many. And much of the food that is popular in Texas, like brisket, chicken fried steak, and tex mex options are notoriously high in fat. Still these can’t be excuses. We need to be educated about good food options and find ways to get regular exercise even when the weather is bad.

  83. Unfortunately, my family has notoriously had heart problems. Specifically my younger brother and grandfather: my brother was unluckily born with a heart murmur, but my grandfather has developed problems over time thanks to a particularly unhealthy lifestyle. Obviously the best way for them and myself to avoid and prevent more problems from happening is to simply eat healthy and exercise consistently throughout my life. My life has been affected by exercise (lacrosse) and diet (eating somewhat healthy) already, and thankfully I have not developed any heart problems and it does not look as if I will any time soon.

  84. Diabetes type 1 is found throughout my family, and my brother was diagnosed with this illness when he was 6 years of age, however as it is caused by genetics there are no preventatives. In addition it is typically diagnosed at a young age so most likely I am safe. Migraines are another illness that are found in my family, and it has been a frequent experience for me, however as it is known that exercise and stress release are effective preventatives of this illness I have begun to workout. This simple practice has drastically decreased the amount of migraines I suffer, and has improved my life significantly. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is another disease that runs in my family and is genetic that I have unfortunately been diagnosed with, however the treatment is similar to that of my migraines and ever sense becoming more active I have been significantly better off.

  85. Changing habits can definitely decrease your chances of getting sick. Unfortunately my family has inherited skin cancer throughout the past few generations, which is the most common type of cancer in the United States today. An easy way to help prevent skin cancer would be to not be out in the sun as much, or when you are out in it to wear a lot of sunscreen. This is definitely something my mom, my sister, and I could work on. I have an addiction to tanning similar to how heavier people are addicted to food. In order to improve my health later on in life I need to break this habit and help others do the same. The good thing is that there is always a way to improve your health!

  86. My family has a huge history of skin cancer. Several people in my family have gotten it. From grandparents, to even my parents, its a very common thing in my family. As a teenage girl working as a lifeguard, I definitely get a lot of sun year round. Everyone likes a cool tan until it turns into cancer. To help prevent the cancer and protect myself, I should definitely load up on sun screen and try to stay in the shade as much as possible, as well as taking frequent trips to the doctor for check ups.

  87. My dad has type two diabetes and he is insulin-dependent. His is a mixture of genetic and self-caused. His dad had diabetes, but his poor eating habits caused him to develop the diabetes. He used to be good about staying healthy and eating right, but he has started giving up on his health because the diabetes depresses him. He is my motivation to try to stay healthy. I don’t want to have diabetes. My mom has also had a lot of heart problems, along with many other problems. My brother has stomach and, possibly, heart problems. I am the only one without a problem and it motivates me to stay healthy so I don’t develop any problems in the future.

I think changing habits would definitely decrease chances of being sick, whether it is by doing little changes say for example eating healthier, working out more, or making sure you are taking care of yourself. Another thing I think is that if your more actively involved it would increase your energy level, but you still have to make sure you eat healthy and make sure you get enough rest, because that plays an important role in your life. For my own health, I try to get eat healthy and get enough sleep for school. As for fitness I work out a lot through cheerleading, which helps me be more active so I wont sit around and eat junk food or stop at fast food restaurants.

  89. My dad has High Cholesterol and it is heredity but can be prevented in many ways. Ways to prevent cholesterol is to eat foods that are good for you, exercise, and mental stress. Also as you get older the easier it is to get high cholesterol the prime age is fifty-five years and older. There are many ways to control your cholesterol the one my dad primary uses is medication to balance his cholesterol levels. So yes, changing habits can decrease ones chances of getting high cholesterol.

  90. My family has faced high blood pressure, and a number of heart attacks and strokes for three generations. My paternal grandfather died of a heart attack, my uncle smokes and has high cholestrol, and my dad has high blood pressure. These problems are mainly a result of bad lifestyle choices. My grandfather did not exercise much and had high blood pressure. My uncle smokes, which increases cholestrol levels. He, too, has had a heart attack but was able to survive it. My dad has decided to control his high blood pressure by doing yoga every day and by eating less fatty foods.

    Being active would definetley increase my energy level. I need to improve my habits because in the long run I will benefit from a healthier lifestyle. The decisions I make as a youth will have a major impact on the way I live 10 years from now. I have been affected by bad diet choices. I used to never have milk, and as a result, had very weak bones. My body became so weak that I had to stop dance for a year. After a year of medical treatments I realized that I would have to have atleast three glasses of milk a day to keep my body healthy.

  91. My family has faced many health issues over generations of time. Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer and other things have all affected numerous members of my family. Most recently, my mom suffered from a life threatening blood clot. Seeing how all of these affected my family, I do my best to stay as healthy as I can be. I don't eat very sugary food often, or food with high amounts of cholesterol. To prevent blood clots, I make sure to stay active and not to sit still for too long. Every year, my sister and I get screened for cancer and the few worrisome spots I have are under watch by a doctor and are checked up on often. I also participate in Relay for Life every year, to help raise money to find the cure for cancer.

    To stay active, I play volleyball multiple times a week, I run on Sunday mornings and play Ultimate Frisbee a couple times a week too. It keeps my energy level higher and gives me a healthier body.

  92. My family has a generation of having high blood pressure and diabetes. Most of my family that
    have been affected by these diseases have been on my mom’s side of the family. I think that
    with, growing up in a small west Texas city, not many people worry about what you do or eat
    can affect you and the rest of your family, without you knowing it. I feel that since we moved
    to Coppell, we have had a bigger concern because there are more places to eat that are bad for
    you. Now, I feel like since we have all these different restaurants, and places to work out, if you don’t do anything you’re just harming yourself. Diabetes isn’t a joke, eating all these bad things will catch up to you in the end when you’re older. With the help of football practice every day and week, I feel that eating a lot isn’t bad for me but it’s not good. It just comes down to what you eat, instead of the quantity.

  93. My father has high blood pressure and my mothers dad died of heart problems. So these things are very important in my life in making sure i do everything possible to prevent these things from happening. Watching my dad consume multiple pills a day just motivates me to do make i can control to hopefully not have these problems when i become older. I can do this my working out which is why i keep my self in sports and eating the right foods to help myself out. But with these tools in mind I'm sure I can hopefully avoid these situations in the future.
